Huntsmen and pack of hounds, 1898, oil on canvas, signed and dated lower right, two mounted huntsmen (wearing Pith helmets) on chestnut horses standing nose-to-nose in profile, surrounded by a pack of nine and a half couple, most hounds individually named, canvas size 40.5 x 50.5 cm (16 x 19 3/4 ins), in a gilt moulded frame (56 x 66 cm) QTY: (1) NOTE: Provenance: Major Frederick Bartholomew Stepleton-Bretherton (1873-1938) of Attington House, Tetsworth, Oxfordshire; gifted to Bertram Henry Gapper (b.1886), thence by descent to the present owner (great-grandson of Bertram Gapper). Major F. B. Stepleton-Bretherton was the son of Frederick Annesley Stapleton-Bretherton and Isabella Mary Petre of Rainhill Hall (or Loyola Hall), near Liverpool. The Stepleton-Bretherton's were noted Catholic landed gentry. Stepleton-Bretherton served in South Africa including the Second Boer War serving with the Imperial Yeomanry. On returning to England he became a noted racehorse owner and was a director of the Bath Racecourse and of the Newbury Racecourse. He was also a member of the Turf Club and Whites Club. The huntsmen wearing Pith helmets and the expansive, open landscape suggest that this scene was painted to represent recreational hunting during Stepleton-Bretherton's time in South Africa. The individually named hounds include: Selina, Martha, Dolly, Rachel, Nemisis (sic), Rashness, Torment, Ruth, Rompish, Massive, and Sportly.

The stretcher is missing a couple of keys and the canvas tension is slack. There is a thick layer of dust on the reverse. The paint layers are in a good, stable condition overall. There are scuffs and losses around the edges of the picture due to poor fitting in the frame. The painting appears to be unvarnished and there is a light layer of surface dust present. George Paice (1854-1925) Studies of six hunters in their stables - Charlton, Hops, Chocolate, Spring, Roderick, Brunette all signed 'G. Paice' (lower left or right) and inscribed with the name of each horse oil on board, all mounted in a period mahogany screen 21 x 28.5cm each 171 x 138cm screen The six paintings are executed in oil on artists’ board with a suppliers stamp for Winsor and Newton on the reverse. The boards are generally in a good condition. The paint layers have been thinly applied. There are scattered losses to the paintings, mainly caused by impact damage. The paintings have thin varnish layers applied which are streaky and have developed a bloom, becoming slightly opaque and purple in tone.

George Paice (English, 1854-1925), A Portrait of Two Setters oil on canvas, signed and dated 1886 at lower right, presented in a gilt frame. SS 19.25 x 29.25 in.; 25 x 35.25 in. Born in London, George Paice studied at the Heatherley School of Fine Art and at the Royal Academy of London. He is best known for his canine and equestrian portraits. He exhibited at the Royal Academy and the Royal Society of British Artists. Dr. Joan C. Huntley was a lifelong patron of the arts and one of the leading collectors of eighteenth and nineteenth century European Painting in North Carolina. Joan and her late husband, Dr. Robert R. Huntley, created the Huntley Gallery at the North Carolina Museum of Art that housed Barbizon paintings they donated to the Museum, just one example of their devoted patronage to museums throughout the State. Joan served on the North Carolina Museum of Art Board of Trustees, and she was a founding member of the Davidson College Art Collection Advisory Committee. Joan established much of her collection during travels to New York, Virginia, Washington D.C., and Padua, Italy, where she visited every spring. From the Estate of the Late Dr. Joan C.
