Peter Paillou (British, c.1757-1831) - Portrait miniature of a young gentleman, in a green coat with green covered buttons, white wais

    Est: £400 - £600

Peter Paillou (British, c.1757-1831) Portrait miniature of a young gentleman, in a green coat with green covered buttons, white waistcoat and lace cravat, powdered hair watercolour on ivory in a silver-gilt frame, signed and dated "P Paillou. 1793", centre right h:6.50 cm Provenance: Given by Auguste Belmont to Juliana, Baroness Mayer Amschel de Rothschild, née Cohen (1831-1877). Thence by descent. Rothschild and Rosebery Collection, Mentmore; Sotheby's, 11 February 1999, lot 97. English Private Collection. Literature: Hannah, Countess of Rosebery, Mentmore Inventory, 1883, p. 110, no. 198 as 'Washington black coat, powdered hair Given to Meyer de Rothschild by Mr Auguste Belmont of New York. George Washington, 1732-1799, celebrated General, and the great founder of American Independence, came of an old English family which traced its origins to the Norman Conquest.' Although little is known about the career and life of Peter Paillou, we know he was working in Scotland by 1818 when a portrait of a 'Robert Scott of Glasgow' was published in mezzotint [British Museum]. The present work, dated 1793, is a good example of the slightly more romantic style of portrait painting which dominated this era achieved through the glossy eyes and the sunset backdrop, a key characteristic of Paillou's work. Although the sitter's identity is at present unknown, it was at one point thought to be George Washington and given as such to the Rothschild family by August Belmont (1813-1890). Belmont had been a clerk in the Rothschild's Frankfurt office before travelling to America where the financial downturn halted his plans to establish a business, instead deciding to become, in effect, a New York-based agent for the Rothschild family, before deciding to settle there himself. He visited the family in London frequently in the 1860s which was perhaps when the present work was presented to them, thus appearing in the 1883 inventory produced not long after.
