Her ability to capture movement, detail and nature in the Japanese style gave her the name "The Australian Hokusai". Another impression of this print is held in the permanent collection of the National Gallery of Australia, Canberra.

ETHLEEN PALMER (1906-1958) Kestrels 1949 serigraph ed. 20 proof dated, editioned, titled and signed below image 29 x 35cm OTHER NOTES: Influenced by Australian printmaker Norbertine Bresslern-Roth, whose prints were exhibited in Sydney in the late 20s, Ethleen Palmer begun to experiment with relief printmaking in 1933. She developed a complex printing tecnhnique of subtly overlaying colour, producing prints strongly reminiscent of Japanese prints, both in composition and execution. Her ability to capture the movement, detail and nature in the Japanese style gave her the name "The Australian Hokusai". Much interest has been shown towards the female Australian printmaking artists of the inter-war years, however Palmer's work has been somewhat overlooked. Her importance to the development of Australian printmaking, especially in the adoption of a Japanese aesthetic deserves greater recognition.
