        Est: £600 - £800

James Lynwood Palmer,  British 1867/68-1941-  Portrait of a bay horse standing in a landscape;  oil on canvas, signed and dated 'Lynwood Palmer / 1915' (lower right), bears label for 'C.M. May & Son' attached to the central stretcher bars, 71.5 x 76.6 cm.  Provenance:  Private Collection, UK.  Note:  Lynwood Palmer was a prominent equestrian painter, completing commissions for figures such as King George V (1865-1936), Daisy Greville, Countess of Warwick (1861-1938), and William Cavendish-Bentinck, Duke of Portland (1857-1943). He emigrated to Canada in 1884, where he worked with horses on cattle ranches, as a hansom cab master, and as a show jumper. These experiences allowed Lynwood Palmer to develop a knowledge of and familiarity with horses which undoubtedly informed his portraits.

Bred by the British National Stud she was the outstanding two-year-old of either sex in Britain in 1932 when she won five consecutive races. In the following year she failed to stay the distance in the 1000 Guineas but had considerable success when reverting to sprint distances, winning the July Cup, King George Stakes and Challenge Stakes. On her retirement from racing she became a successful and influential broodmare.

James Lynwood Palmer (British, 1868-1941) CORCYRA, A CHESTNUT RACEHORSE (OWNED BY LORD LONDONDERRY) oil on canvas h:47.50  w:44 in. The Bloodstock Breeders Review, 1920: During the last few years misfortune has relentlessly pursued the Pearmain family. In 1916 Coup de Main by Spearmint out of Pearmain was killed by a bomb dropped at Newmarket by a raiding German Zeppelin; in 1918 Pearman herself died from pneumonia, shortly before she was due to foal to Sunstar. At Ascot that year Polumetis, by Polymelus out of Pearmain, broke a leg and had to be destroyed. Early in August Corcyra, brother to Polumetis, fractured a leg at the Wynyard Park stud and had to be shot. A few days later Pomace, dam of Gymcrack Stakes winner Polemarch, died. It is a melancholy cataloque of disasters, one which much incites sympathy for Lord Londonderry. Both Pearmain and her son Polumetis split a pastern when two years old, and after Polumetis and Coryra had come to untimely ends by fracturing limbs, the question was raised whether members of this family have inherited a factor which makes for brittleness of bones. If so, did Pearmain derive it from her sire Persimmon, whose death, it may be remembered, was due to a fracture of his pelvis? It is, of course, possible she did though the idea is perhaps rather farfetched as there is no evidence of any other of the numerous offspring of Persimmon having inherited or transmitted brittlebone. The early death of Corcyra, he was only nine years old, is very regrettable as there were unmistakable indications that he was going to develop into a highly successful sire. If there had been no other winner by him than Blue Dun, breeders would have trusted him with their mares. His stock have now raced for three seasons. He did not make hit right away for in 1918 he claimed only one winner (Coryphee) of one race. The next year there were three winners of eight races the best of them being, of course, Blue Dun. This year Corcyra's stock have done well, among the winners by him being the smart two year old filly Volcanic. Mention must be made of his daughter Cleopatra, a big winner in the United States and a fine stayer. We shall not see the last of two year olds by Coryra until 1923, so before his name disappears from the annual list of winning sires the total of stakes to his credit is likely to be greatly augmented. A survey of Corcyra's racing career reveals him to be a high class horse. He won four races as a two year old, the last and most important of his successes being gained in the contest for the Middle Park Plate in which he beat Stornoway, Kennymore, Black Jester and others. In the Dewhurst Plate he failed by two lengths to give Kennymore 10lbs. The following season his first outing was in the 2,000 guineas. There was a great finish in that race, Kennymore beating Corcyra by a short head with Black Jester 3rd, 2 lenghs away. He was not nominated for the Derby, but he won the Newmarket Stakes, the Whitsuntide Plate at Hurst Park, and the Ascot Derby. In the last-named race he gave Hapsburg 5lb. and beat him more easily than Durber11 had done in the Derby. There can indeed be little doubt that with ordinary luck Cocyra would have won the Derby had he been able to compete. At Newmarket in July he won the Midsummer Stakes, and as he was proved a good stayer with good speed there appeared to be every reason to anticipate his triumph in the St. Leger at Doncaster. Unfortunately, however, while under going preparation for that ordeal he became incommoded by varicose veins. These eventually necessitated his being turned out of training and in 1915 he began his stud career. He had a season at Newmarket before going to Wynyard Park. Corcyra had not the sweetest of dispositions and special measures had to be resorted to in order to humour him.

Goldfinch was one of the only sons of Ormonde, the 1886 English Triple Crown winner. He was a good juvenile but retired after his 2-year-old season. He was described as lengthy with a long, strong hip. Goldfinch sired One Thousand Guineas winner Chelandry before James Ben Ali Haggin purchased the stallion in 1894 and sent him to his Rancho del Paso in California. There, he sired Preakness winner Old English. After Haggin dispersed this farm, Goldfinch was sent to his Elmendorf Farm in Kentucky. He died there in 1914.

        Est: $2,000 - $4,000

James Lynwood Palmer, 1868-1941, British, Active in NY, Canada, o/c, "Jenkintown Coach", 20" x 34" , signed and dated '95 lower left. This was done early in his career at the age of 27, perhaps before he returned to England where he painted many equine portraits. The coach's side has the following inscriptions: "The Rising Sun", on the front of the drivers seat, & "Branchtown" on the coachman's seat. There was a 6 passenger 4-horse drawn coach that ran from the Philadelphia area to Pittsburgh from 1809 to 1852. It's western terminus was the Rising Sun Inn in Monroeville, PA, about 10 miles east of Pittsburgh and Branchtown is recorded as having in the 22nd ward of Philadelphia, near what is called Germantown today. This painting could be a unique peek into the trans-Pennsylvania public transportation system in the 1st half of the 19th c prior to the completion of the Pennsylvania Railroad line in 1852. This work descended in the Wanamaker family and Wanamaker could have been a patron of Palmer.

An enthusiastic coacher, Vanderbilt often drove the vehicle himself, perfectly turned out in coachman's attire. The "Venture," which was made by the Brewster Company of New York in 1903, can still be seen in the carriage house at The Breakers, the Vanderbilt mansion in Newport. Tragically, Alfred Vanderbilt went down with the RMS Lusitania when it was torpedoed by a German U-Boat on the night of May 7, 2015 off the coast of Ireland. Hertz had a group of pretty good horses that he gave to an up-and-coming young trainer, Bert Michell, to help further his career. One of those horses, Reigh Count, proceeded to win the Kentucky Derby and Jockey Club Gold Cup in America and then went to Europe and won the Coronation Cup at Epsom. Hertz was very pleased and commissioned Lynwood Palmer to do a painting of Reigh Count, the jockey Chick Lang, and the trainer Michell. A few months later Hertz was in England and called the popular young trainer to invite him to lunch to discuss the horse's condition and the upcoming Gold Cup at Royal Ascot. However, Michell replied that he "would like to but he was having tea that day with the Crown princess." Of course, Hertz attributed Michell's overnight stardom to the horses he had given him. Reigh Count came in second to Invershin in the Gold Cup, infuriating Hertz, who blamed the loss on Michell. He sent the painting back to Lynwood Palmer and had the trainer painted out.
