    • 18th Century Italian Old Master Oil Painting Entitled "King Solomon’s Court"

18th Century Italian Old Master Oil Painting Entitled "King Solomon’s Court"

      Est: $7,500 - $15,000

Large 18th Century Italian oil painting attributed to School of Giovanni Paolo Pannini (1691 - 1765) | Italian Baroque Style | Entitled King Solomon’s Court | Measures 24 x 55 inches | Very Good Condition considering age, signs of professional restoration. Remarkable Baroque Italian painting from 18th century | The Oil on Canvas painting depicts the Christian Old Testament story of King Soloman’s Court (1 Kings 3:16 – 28). 1 Kings 3:16–28 recounts that two mothers living in the same house, each the mother of an infant son, came to Solomon. One of the babies had died, and each claimed the remaining boy as her own. Calling for a sword, Solomon declared his judgment: the baby would be cut in two, each woman to receive half. One mother thought the ruling fair, but the other begged Solomon, “Give the baby to her, just don’t kill him!” The king declared the second woman the true mother, as a mother would even give up her baby if that was necessary to save its life. This judgment became known throughout all of Israel and was considered an example of profound wisdom. This Painting is of excellent pictorial quality. Housed in a more recent contemporary wooden frame | The work is painted with bright and vibrant colors, rich in detail and characters | The painting is in excellent state of conservation.

The attribution to Pannini is confirmed by Charles Beddington on the basis of photographs. Beddington believes the painting to be an early work of the artist, possibly created as part of an interior decoration. The high, narrow format might suggest that the work was placed between windows. ---------- * De kavels 347 en 348 zullen eerst apart - daarna in combinatie - geveild worden. * Lot numbers 347 and 348 will be auctioned together. In this case the single lot numbers are only bid under reserve and are afterwards recalled again with the total surcharge sum.
