Peter Paone (American 1936-) Girl with a Bird watercolor on paper signed lower left 20 x 14" 27 x 21" Drawing from his vivid imagination, the Philadelphia artist and teacher Peter Paone created a series of still life paintings that are full of life, tension, contradictions, and reflections on the artist’s own history and society at large. Inspired by Dutch vanitas paintings, in which the viewer is meant to contemplate the passage of time and inevitability of death, Paone has depicted and combined seemingly-disparate objects and animals—like cakes, cats, asparagus, skeletons, birds, and fish—into intriguing arrangements. According to the artist, “for me, still life painting is much more than a composition of household goods, it’s a gathering from a journey of a life lived…my task is to compose my stories with objects draped in color performing together on a tabletop stage in a framed theater.”

He has taught at Pratt Institute in New York, The National Academy of Design in New York and since 1978 The Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts in Philadelphia. The artist has received a number of grants and awards such as two Louis Comfort Tiffany Foundation Grants, a Pennsylvania Council for the Arts Grant, A Mid- Atlantic Foundation grant, the first Print Club Award of Merit, The 172nd Annual Painting Prize from The National Academy of Design and three years in London on a Guggenheim Foundation Fellowship. His work has been featured in fifty two one person exhibitions in New York, Houston, Fort Worth, Philadelphia, as well as in London, Vienna and Germany. Since 1960, his work has joined that of other artists in sixty national and international group exhibitions.
