Triumph and Tragedy: The Life and Works of Félix Pardo de Tavera. Pasay City: Foreign Service Institute, 2022. Colored photographs and title on pages 160-161. cuisine while at the same time forging friendships with the Pardo de Tavera brothers and their ilustrado friends. Under the tutelage of Mariano Benlliure, Felix’s style was said to have adopted “the characteristics of spontaneity and naturalism, as seen in Mariano’s body of works. Mariano’s sculptures display detailed naturalism coupled with impressionistic tinges,” as described in Jose Ma. Carino’s book, Triumph and Tragedy (1922). The detailed naturalism and spontaneity described above are most evident in his small sculptures which were rendered in marble then cast in bronze and then later in brass done posthumously. To meet the demand for his small sculptures, Felix set up a foundry at the family’s seaside home at Bercksur-Mer in Northern France. Felix’s most popular small bronze sculptures were Antropofago, The Gamin, El Viejo Marinero, and C’est Mi! Felix’s most charming works are his sculptures of children which capture their innocence, their impishness, and their mirth. As mentioned in Ruby Paredes’ essay, “The Pardo de Taveras of Manila,” published in Alfred McCoy’s An Anarchy of Families, “In 1886, in Madrid, Felix won silver medals for his works, A Man, A Girl, and Juan Salcedo. A description of the artistic entries to the Paris Exposition in 1889 noted that “the young Filipino D. Felix Pardo de Tavera (had created) a handsome work of art (referring to C’est Mi) of an exquisite taste revealing in the author a sculptural talent bordering on genius.” On 19 October 1889, Felix Pardo de Tavera married a French Argentine woman named Inocencia Agustina Manigot y Dessein in Paris, France and set up a separate household. After the Luna tragedy, the trial , and acquittal, Felix picked up the pieces of his life and relocated to Buenos Aires, Argentina where he resumed his medical practice as a pediatrician and was appointed as the director of the French hospital in Argentina. He also set up another foundry in Adrogue, Buenos Aires and gained even more renown as a sculptor, receiving commissions for monuments, art exhibits, and busts of prominent personalities. Felix also did a bust of his good friend, Jose Rizal, which he kept but that fell and was unfortunately shattered. Unknown to many Felix joined the competition for the design of the Rizal monument held from 1905-1907 which was initially won by the Italian sculptor, Carlos Nicoli of Carrara, Italy, for his scaled plaster model entitled, Al Martir de Bagumbayan. However, he failed to show up at the designated time to sign the contract. The contract was then awarded to the second placer, the Swiss sculptor, Richard Kissling for his Motto Stella (Guiding Star). Felix’s design, which was deemed too elaborate and expensive, was rendered by Paete carver, Luis Ac-ac, and can be seen in Carino’s book, Triumph & Tragedy. Felix and his family had a good life in Buenos Aires. As Felix advanced in years, he moved to the seaside resort town of Biarritz. He passed away in Paris, France on 12 November 1932. He was laid to rest at the family mausoleum at PereLachaise Cemetery in Paris, France. Bibliography: Carino, Jose Ma. A. Triumph & Tragedy, The Life & Works Felix Pardo de Tavera. PROPERTY FROM THE DON J. ANTONIO ARANETA COLLECTION Roman Woman signed with a dedication “Al Sr. Llanso Recuerdo” (lower right) ca. 1892 oil on pyro-engraved wood 19 3/4” x 13 1/2” (50 cm x 34 cm) PROVENANCE Private collection, Spain WRITE UPFelix Pardo de Tavera would be the last scholar of the Manila Academia, beginning his scholarship in 1892, possibly helped along by the fact that he already lived in Europe. The scholar Luciano P.R. Santiago would write about his artistic career thus : “Like his elder brother, Trinidad Herminigildo, he graduated with the degree of doctor of medicine at the University of Paris in 1882. He then combined his medical practice with sculpture, his first love. It must be remembered that the building which was rented by the Manila Academy was owned by his family and he had taken art classes there before transfering to Paris in 1877. He had also won a silver medal at thePhilippine Exposition in 1887 as noted already, and bronze medals at the Universal Exposition of Paris in 1889 and the Fine Arts Exposition of Barcelona in 1891.With these credentials, he won the first pension in sculpture created by the royal order of 1890. As will be seen later he also turnedout to be the last Philippine art scholar of this period. He started his scholarship in Paris in April of 1892. Barely five months later, he was involved in the family controversy. As a result, he emigrated to Buenos Aires, Argentina in 1895 to finish the last year of his scholarship and settle there permanently. This work depicting a Roman woman, one hand holding the folds of her toga, reflects the interests of the time for all things Pompeii, the ancient site had been discovered in that century. It is a rare work in wood since Pardo de Tavera would usually work in the more conventional bronze.

    Felix Pardo de Tavera (1859 - 1932) C’est mi!... (Bercks/Mer)

    Est: ₱80,000 - ₱104,000

Felix Pardo de Tavera (1859 - 1932) C’est mi!... (Bercks/Mer) signed and dated 1890; stamped 456 bronze H: 11” (28 cm) D: 3 1/2” (9 cm) Sculptor and physician Félix Pardo de Tavera was the son of the elder Félix Pardo de Tavera, a member of the Consejo de Administración, and Juliana Gorricho, female scion of a prominent real estate family that owned Escolta. He is the brother of Paz Pardo de Tavera, Juan Luna’s ill-fated wife, and erudite scholar Trinidad Pardo de Tavera. Félix and his siblings were orphaned by their father at very young ages; Félix Sr. was among the casualties of the 1863 Manila earthquake. The children were then taken under the wing of their uncle, Joaquin Pardo de Tavera, a liberal lawyer and member of the Comite de Reformadores, which campaigned for reforms in the Spanish colonial government. Félix studied at the Ateneo from 1874-76 while attending classes at the Academia de Dibujo y Pintura. In 1877, he sailed to France to pursue further studies, enrolling at Sorbonne University and graduating with a degree in medicine in 1882. His dissertation studied the causes of fetal death during early pregnancy. Félix then specialized in pediatric surgery, working at Paris’ Hôpital Lariboisière. The historical context and significance of his sculptural masterpiece titled C’est mi! (lit. “It’s me!”) is likely connected to his experience of being paternally orphaned at a young age and his studies and work in pediatrics. The image of a smiling stout boy may contrastingly allude to Felix’s lost gaiety as a child. Furthermore, the work likely reflects the endearing children whose lives he had come across in his pediatric career. C’est mi! is a celebration of childhood innocence and naivety (which, in the case of Félix, was lost too soon) and Félix’s lived experiences. (A.M.)

    C'est mi!

    Est: ₱120,000 - ₱156,000

Modeled in the form of a young boy standing with hands in his pockets, Felix Pardo de Tavera’s sculpture titled C'est mi! is seemingly a study of the self. By using a compounded play on words, Pardo de Tavera’s intention is one of self-discovery as he uses his past self as a reference point for his present piece and his future plans. By doing so, Pardo de Tavera’s straightforward piece becomes a medium of self-contemplation and identity. By sculpting his past self at his present condition, de Tavera deterritorializes identity by removing the social context of the past through the use of a uniformed palette, medium, and style throughout this sculpture.
