Constantin PARTHÉNIS (1878-1967) Allegorical Composition - Nike

The work is part of the allegorical compositions by Parthenis of the 1950s. A draft of the work is part of a private collection (Sotheby's: Lot 103, November 18, 2003 and Lot 65, December 12, 2005, pencil on paper, 76 x 84 cm). The recent catalogue issued by The National Gallery for Parthenis’ exhibition (20 June-28 November 2022) features the frieze with the four rectangular scenes as an independent work (number 13720, oil, pencil and charcoal pencil on canvas, 18 x 87.5 cm) and the draft (number 13721, pencil on rice paper, 18 x 87.5 cm). The first scene on the left portrays ships during a battle. It is probably a victorious naval combat that took place during the Antiquity, since the ships look like triremes. The following scene portrays a soldier on horseback, probably King Constantine during the Balkan Wars. The third scene is linked to the recent warfare history of Greece judging by the soldier's uniform and the flag. The last scene on the right is unfinished. However, the Acropolis and the Parthenon are visible in the background. A smaller version of the auctioned work which is accompanied by several relevant studies is part of the collection of the National Gallery (number 6665, 47.5 X 52 cm). The exhaustive study of the subject in question suggests that it was an exceptional work that troubled Parthenis; its content, however, remains a mystery. The National Gallery's version is entitled "Nike", but the smaller part at the bottom with the rectangular sections is unfinished. Thus, it can be concluded that the Allegorical Composition - Nike troubled Parthenis; he created several drafts on paper (for the overall composition and for some of its parts) and also painted the subject on the canvas in different dimensions. Let us not forget that he had already worked on the subject of "Nike" and that during the same period he explored other subjects linked to the "Homeland" (see Nike, The National Gallery Alexandros Soutsos Museum, Religion and Homeland, The National Gallery Alexandros Soutsos Museum, Palaion Patron Germanos raising the flag of the revolution, private collection, etc.). The work is protected as a newer movable monument according to the by the Ministerial Decision under reference number ΥΠΠΘ/ ΔΙΛΑΠ /Β/ 2036/28874/02.06-1999 Hellenic Government gazette ΦΕΚ 1367/Β/05-07-1999). Moreover, pursuant to par. 1, art. 34 of L. 4858/2021 exporting the work is prohibited.
