Edward Paschke Sold at Auction Prices

Painter, b. 1939 - d. 2004

Ed Paschke was born in Chicago, IL, where he spent most of his life. An American painter of Polish descent, his early interest in animated cartoons provided him with a love of bright colors and surrealist representational art that never left him. Classically trained at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago, he grew into a popular professor of art history and mentor to Chicago's mid-century art scene.

Biography

Born to Polish-American parents in Chicago in 1939, Ed Paschke learned art at his father's side, as the family's limited income was supplemented by the elder Paschke's wood carving and sketches. He attended the Art Institute of Chicago, where he was exposed to the works of Gaugin and Picasso, both of whom would influence Paschke's style for the rest of his life.

Ed Paschke was drafted into the United States Army in 1962, who needed artists to draft educational materials and training manuals for troops. Assigned to the Training Aids Department in Louisiana, Paschke developed a technique for quickly turning out commissioned works with accompanying text for operating complex equipment and weapons. During the 1960s, he also contributed heavily to Playboy Magazine, where his work struck a distinctive note for colorful depictions of whimsical erotica.

Pashke's preferred painting style combined elements of realism with Pop Art-style distortions and riotous colors. He passed away from natural causes on Thanksgiving Day in 2004, followed by his wife just 7 weeks later.

Ed Paschke (American, 1939-2004) "Poderosa," 1991, color lithograph signed, titled and dated in pencil lower margin edition 26/60, framed. Size: 30'' x 40'', 76 x 102 cm (sheet); 32.75'' x 42.75'', 83 x 109 cm (frame). Provenance: The Robert L. Pfannebecker Collection. Artist Biography: Ed Paschke received his B.F.A. from the School of The Art Institute of Chicago in 1961 and his M.F.A. in 1970. Between degrees he lived for a time in New York where he easily came under the influence of Pop art, in part, because of his interests as a child in animation and cartoons. His fascination with the print media of popular culture led to a portrait-based art of cultural icons. Paschke used the celebrity figure, real or imagined, as a vehicle for explorations of personal and public identity with social and political implications.
