• PIERRE PATEL - Landscape with architectures
      Jun. 08, 2017

PIERRE PATEL - Landscape with architectures

      Est: €2,000 - €2,500

PIERRE PATEL (Chauny, 1615 - Paris, 1676) Landscape with architectures Oil on canvas, 66 x 49.5 cm The canvas is attributed to Pierre Patel, a French artist best known for his landscapes. His production is influenced by Laurent de La Hyre, a painter whose balanced scenes were valued by ancient ruins painted with special attention. This painting shows those elements that distinguish Patel's landscapes illuminated by a bright light and enriched by architectural structures that mark the space. The presence of figures, as in this case of a shepherd boy and two silhouettes in the background, could be found in other artworks made by the same artist such as Landscape with ruins preserved at Louvre. This is a characteristic resumed by the Parisian painting’s classicist current of the mid-seventeenth century.

Pierre I Le Bon Patel, Roman Landscape, France, 17th C.

      Est: €3,200 - €4,000

Watercolor and gouache on paper; laid down on panel France, 17th century Pierre I Le Bon Patel (c.1605-1676) - French landscape painter Dimensions: 12.5 x 16.5 cm Provenance: Private collection, United Kingdom Very good condition Pierre I Le Bon Patel created romantic landscapes which followed the tradition of classical landscapes by Claude Lorrain; his small-sized watercolor paintings fetch up to €7,400 at international auctions The present watercolor is a characteristic work of the French painter Pierre Le Bon I Patel active in the 17th century. It reveals a Northern Italian fantasy landscape which is framed by an ancient temple element on the left. The picturesque scenery is animated by antique staffage figures, as it had been introduced by French classicists such as Nicolas Poussin (1594-1665) and Claude Lorrain (1600-1682). The latter deeply influenced Pierre Patel's artistic output and significantly shaped his pictorial and technical development. The paper is irreversibly laid down on panel. The paint surface shows a few shiny areas. The work is in very good overall condition. The depiction measures 11.3 x 15.3 cm and the size of the panel is 12.5 x 16.5 cm. The frame is in very good condition with only small traces of age and use. The framed dimensions are 17 x 20.5 cm. Pierre I Le Bon Patel (c.1605-1676) Pierre I Le Bon Patel was probably born in the Picardy. In 1635 he became a member of the Académie de Saint Luc in Paris. Landscapes seem to be his central motif. He was deeply inspired by the Italianate works of Claude Lorrain (1604 / 5-1682), whose paintings he must have seen in Paris. Patel however seems never to have traveled to Italy. In the years between 1646-7 he was involved in the decorative schemes for the Hôtel Lambert in Paris. His son, Pierre-Antoine Patel (1648-1707), also became a painter and followed him as a landscape painter. (cbo) Shipping costs excl. statutory VAT and plus 2,5% (+VAT) shipping insurance.

LITERATURE N. Coural, Les Patel. Pierre Patel (1605-1676) et ses fils. Le paysage de ruines … Paris au XVII e siŠcle, Paris, p. 207, no. PAP5, illustrated. NOTES In her monograph on the Patel family of painters, Natalie Coural attributes this picture to Pierre-Antoine, Pierre Patel's son. She suggests an early date in the oeuvre of the artist of circa 1667-70 and points out the great similarity between the architectural backdrops employed by father and son; compare, for example, the ruins in this picture to those in Pierre Patel's Landscape (Coural, op. cit., no. PP44, illustrated). According to Coural, the treatment of the landscape and the architecture also recall the style of Jacques Patel, the second son of Pierre, whose only known work is a Landscape in the Speed Art Museum, Louisville ( ibid., no. JP1). However, this one picture does not provide enough support to confirm an attribution to him.
