H. Payne sc. // Eugene Sue // Verlag der Englischen Kunstanstalt von A. H. Payne in Leipzig". Very fine bust portrait of Eugène Sue. Self-confidently the young Sue leans his left arm on his hip and looks at the viewer, with his right hand he pulls a doorbell. He wears a black skirt with a top hat, behind him are tall houses in an alley in the dark of night. Small scenes, separated by vines and foliage, frame Sue's portrait. Eugène Sue (Paris 1804 - Annecy 1857) was a French writer. Almost forgotten today, Sue was one of the most widely read authors in France during his lifetime. He went down in literary history with his serial novels in daily newspapers and was the author of the successful newspaper novel "Les mystères de Paris" (The Mysteries of Paris, 1814). Insel Verlag published this novel as a complete edition in 2 parts in 2008. Albert Henry Payne (London 1812 - Leipzig 1902) was a reproduction engraver, painter and illustrator.
