A Helping Hand, circa 1920-30, black ink and black chalk on pale cream wove paper, laid onto artist's board, original illustration, depicting two children in a wintery scene, an older child wearing bobble hat, scarf and gloves, older child tying a bow in the younger child's hat, signed in pencil to lower left, some minor spotting to lower area, closed tear with adhesive repair to right edge, paper guard adhered to top of verso, title in pencil and Francis & Mills label to verso, together with 32 other original illustrations mainly in pencil but with some pastels and one gouache, subjects including: mocked up cover for Home magazine showing a young girl sitting on a stool dated October 1924; two children sitting on a high backed chair together reading a book; a baby sitting on a cushion undoing some knitting; a toddler wearing a bib with ducks and licking a spoon; a small child's face being sponged; a young child kneeling on a piano stool pressing the keys with their hands; a small boy one hand across his face, the other over his behind with an older woman standing next to him holding a cane across her body; together with various studies of children and landscapes, three with The London Press Exchange Ltd labels to verso with client 'Nestle' or 'Nestle Milk' in pencil, six signed or initialled, some with publisher's notes to margins, largest 46 x 33 cm QTY: (1 folder)

'The Magic Fishbone', 1911, 2 colour and 3 grisaille watercolour, original illustrations, depicting different scenes including two small boys hauling a large sack along a chequered floor ('Two chubby-legged princes tugged at the Royal Rag-bag and lugged it in'), a small boy being chased by a dog ('The snapping little pug next door chased one of the little princes as he was coming home from school'), a line-up of children ('They had 19 children ... and were always having more!'), slightly edge-frayed, fold mark down middle, closed tear to right margin repaired on verso with adhesive tape, pencil sketches of children's head and shoulders to verso, another depicting a small girl trying to do up the dress of another girl while a small boy looks on ('Several of the children were growing out of their clothes'), and a king sitting with his head in his hands, watched by several children ('"What is the matter, Papa?" I am dreadfully poor, my child"'), each with pencilled caption to margin below image, some minor dust-soiling, from 24 x 39.6 cm (9 1/2 x 15 1/2 ins) to 26.9 x 19.3 cm (10 5/8 x 7 5/8 ins) QTY: (5) NOTE: The Magic Wishbone was published by The Saint Cathedral Press and James Nisbet. Pearse was known for her children's book series about a young girl, Ameliaranne, as well as beautiful, ethereal images of children and nature.

SUSAN BEATRICE PEARSE. Dreamland. Mixed media with acrylic, wash, and watercolor on board. 458x356 mm; 18x14 inches. Cover for the January 1913 issue of The Ladies' Home Journal. Signed lower left and with remnants of original LHJ label on contemporary paper attached to verso. Image bright and clean with strong color, but removed from frame which darkened and eroded 1/2-inch perimeter of recto and lower quarter of the board recto; publisher's notes on verso. A copy of the Ladies' Home Journal issue accompanies the lot.
