    Joaquín Peinado (Ronda, Málaga, 1898 - Paris, 1975) “Still life”. Oil on canvas. Signed and dated “Peinado 51”. 46 x 54 cm. The Andalusian painter Joaquín Peinado settles in Paris in 1923, joining the group of Spanish painters that included Manuel Ángeles Ortiz, Hernando Viñes, Francisco Bores, Pancho Cossío and Picasso, with whom he had a special friendship. He did not lose contact with Spain, keeping his friendship with García Lorca and participating in the legendary 1st exhibition of the Iberian Artists Society in 1925, as well as doing illustrations for magazines such as Litoral, Gallo and La Gaceta Literaria. He also moved in film and theatrical circles, participating in 'Un Chien Andalou' (1929) and 'L´Age d´Or' (1930) by Buñuel, as well as the performance of Falla´s 'El Retablo de Maese Pedro' in Amsterdam alongside Buñuel, Cossío, Viñes and M. A. Ortiz. He was director of the painting section of the Union of Spanish Intellectuals and a UNESCO delegate for the Spanish painters of the School of Paris. En 1946 he was one of the organisers of the great exhibition 'Art of Republican Spain. Spanish Artists of the School of Paris” which took place in Prague. From this time on his personal style accompanied him throughout his artistic career, denoting the importance of drawing, modelling, rationalisation and his peculiar use of pictorial material which achieved the transparencies and softness which give his pictures the appearance of watercolours. The Peinado Museum in Ronda has a very similar picture in its still life collection also dated in 1958. This composition sums up Peinado´s universe with the studio table on which the everyday utensils of his life lay, a scene which is repeated in the majority of his still life pictures. Delicate composition of planes of colour and geometrical shapes that take the form of glasses, sugar bowls, bottles, etc. Subtle, elegant, sober… the essence of painting.

Joaquín Ruiz-Peinado Vallejo was a cubist painter, successor of Cézanne and spiritual son of Picasso, he was one of the most outstanding representatives of the Spanish School of Paris. He entered the San Fernando School of Fine Arts in Madrid in 1918, and during the following years he became a disciple of Cecilio Plá and Julio Romero de Torres, and was awarded a scholarship for three years at the Monastery of Santa María de El Paular, winning the El Paular Painting Prize in 1922. In 1923, once he finished his studies, he went to Paris, where he settled permanently. There he attended the classes given at the Ranson, Colarossi and La Grande Chaumière academies, while he became interested in cubist painting, an aesthetic that he would personalize and maintain in his works. Also, in 1924 he showed his work at the Salons des Indépendants, Surindépendants and d'Automne. Nevertheless, from the city of the Seine he continued to be part of the Spanish artistic life, participating in the mythical First Exhibition of the Society of Iberian Artists in 1925, and illustrating the magazines "Litoral", "Gallo" and "La Gaceta Literaria", as well as "La flor de California" (1928) by José María Hinojosa. Also, in 1926 he won the Painting Prize of the Diputación de Málaga. Three years later, in 1929, he participated in two important exhibitions of avant-garde art in Spain: the Exhibition of Paintings and Sculptures of Spanish Residents in Paris, at the Botanical Garden in Madrid, and the Regional Exhibition of Modern Art, at the Casa de los Tiros in Granada. He also maintained a relationship with the performing arts, like other artists of the time, participating in the films "Un perro andaluz" (1929) and "La edad de oro" (1930), by his friend Buñuel, or as a set designer and draftsman for "Carmen", by Feyder (1925). Likewise, in 1926 he participated in the representation of "El retablo de Maese Pedro" by Falla in Amsterdam together with Buñuel, Cossío, Viñes and Ángeles Ortiz. Over time, his artistic career would lead him to occupy a prominent position within the School of Paris; he would be director of the Painting Section of the Union of Spanish Intellectuals and later vice-president of the same, and UNESCO would appoint him delegate of the Section of Spanish Painters of the School of Paris. Also, in 1946 he was one of the organizers of the exhibition "Art of Republican Spain. Spanish Artists of the School of Paris", held in Prague and, due to its enormous success, later also in Brno. From that date on, his international exhibitions were frequent, both individual and collective, being grouped within the best French art of the time. However, it was not until 1969 when a retrospective of his work was held in Spain; organized by the Dirección General de Bellas Artes and held at the Museo de Arte Español Contemporáneo in Madrid, this exhibition consecrated his figure in our country. In fact, that same year he was appointed member of the Royal Academy of San Telmo in Malaga. Currently his work is widely represented in the museum that bears his name in Ronda, as well as in the Unicaja collection and many other public and private collections.

In this post-cubist composition by Joaquín Peinado, we observe a reclining female figure, whose head rests on her hands. The arrangement of arms, forearms and shoulders forms a triangle that encloses the rounded shape of the head, reinforcing the dialogue between anatomy and geometry. Behind the figure rises a pyramidal structure, which accentuates the presence of geometric elements in the composition and establishes a deliberate contrast with the organicity of the human figure. To one side, other arms and another cut-out head can be distinguished, belonging to a body located outside the frame, which introduces a sensation of fragmentation and spatial continuity beyond the limit of the drawing. In the background and in the peripheral areas, very subtle, almost evanescent shapes appear, suggesting other presences or silhouettes; these faint lines generate an organic linearity that dialogues with the dominant geometric linearity of the main structure. The palette is reduced and sober, based on black, gray and an orange tone that introduces a slight chromatic accent. The gestural lines, combined with angular forms, inscribe the work within a modern language, where the constructive and the lyrical coexist in a balanced way.     Joaquin Peinado was a prominent representative of Spanish artists from the École de Paris. Still Life with Cherries was exhibited at Mánes in 1946 as part of the Art of Republican Spain exhibition, which featured artists from the Spanish École de Paris. Among them were Óscar Domínguez, Pablo Picasso, Luis Fernández, and Joaquin Peinado. Peinado exhibited a total of 12 works there. Still Life with Cherries is shrouded in provocative, intimate lighting that highlights striking contrasts. Bright colors shine through the darkness, and simple geometric forms reveal Peinado's sense of matter and its arrangement. The exhibition was extremely successful in the post-war period and also served as a political statement—a protest against Franco's fascist dictatorship. Three years later, in 1929, he participated in two important exhibitions of avant-garde art in Spain: the Exhibition of Paintings and Sculptures by Spaniards Resident in Paris, in the Botanical Garden of Madrid, and the Regional Exhibition of Modern Art, in the Casa de the Grenade Shots. He also maintained a relationship with the performing arts, like other artists of the time, participating in the films “An Andalusian Dog” (1929) and “The Golden Age” (1930), by his friend Buñuel, or as a set designer and artist for “ Carmen”, by Feyder (1925). Likewise, in 1926 he participated in the representation of “El retablo de Maese Pedro” by Falla in Amsterdam together with Buñuel, Cossío, Viñes and Ángeles Ortiz. Over time, his artistic career would lead him to occupy a prominent position within the School of Paris; He will be director of the Painting Section of the Union of Spanish Intellectuals and later vice-president of the same, and UNESCO will appoint him delegate of the Section of Spanish Painters of the School of Paris. Likewise, in 1946 he was one of the organizers of the exhibition “Art of Republican Spain. Spanish Artists of the School of Paris”, held in Prague and, due to its enormous success, later also in Brno. From that date on, his international exhibitions, both individual and collective, were frequent, being grouped within the best French art of the time. However, it would not be until 1969 when a retrospective of his work was held in Spain; organized by the General Directorate of Fine Arts and held at the Museum of Contemporary Spanish Art in Madrid, this exhibition will consecrate his figure in our country. In fact, that same year he was appointed member of the Royal Academy of San Telmo in Malaga. Currently, his work is widely represented in the museum that bears his name in Ronda, as well as in the Unicaja collection and many other public and private collections.

Joaquín Ruiz-Peinado Vallejo was a cubist painter, successor of Cézanne and spiritual son of Picasso, he was one of the most outstanding representatives of the Spanish School of Paris. He entered the San Fernando School of Fine Arts in Madrid in 1918 and in the following years became a pupil of Cecilio Plá and Julio Romero de Torres, and was awarded a scholarship for three years at the Monastery of Santa María de El Paular, winning the El Paular Painting Prize in 1922. In 1923, once he had finished his studies, he went to Paris, where he settled permanently. There he attended the classes given at the Ranson, Colarossi and La Grande Chaumière academies, while at the same time he became interested in Cubist painting, an aesthetic he would personalise and maintain in his works. In 1924 he also showed his work at the Salons des Indépendants, Surindépendants and d'Automne. Nevertheless, from the city of the Seine he continued to be part of Spanish artistic life, taking part in the mythical First Exhibition of the Society of Iberian Artists in 1925, and illustrating the magazines "Litoral", "Gallo" and "La Gaceta Literaria", as well as "La flor de California" (1928) by José María Hinojosa. In 1926 he also won the Painting Prize of the Diputación de Málaga. In 1926 he also took part in the performance of Falla's "El retablo de Maese Pedro" in Amsterdam together with Buñuel, Cossío, Viñes and Ángeles Ortiz. In time, his artistic career would lead him to occupy a prominent position within the School of Paris; he would become director of the Painting Section of the Union of Spanish Intellectuals and later vice-president of the same, and UNESCO would appoint him delegate of the Section of Spanish Painters of the School of Paris. In 1946 he was also one of the organisers of the exhibition "Arte de la España Republicana.
