Agnes Lawrence Pelton (1881 - 1961) "Summer Splendor" (Cathedral City, California) Oil on Canvas. Signed and dated lower right, and titled on reverse. Agnes Pelton was a pioneering American modernist whose career had several phases that reflected her wide-ranging interests, extensive travels, and ability to grow and change. In 1931, she started living in California where she focused on desert scenes with some of her paintings being abstract stylistically and others representational. In 1995, the Palm Springs Desert Museum held a major retrospective of her painting. Exhibition venues for Pelton during her lifetime included the Brooklyn Museum, Fine Arts Gallery of San Diego, Laguna Beach Art Association, Salons of America, Museum of New Mexico, California-Pacific Exposition at San Diego and the Santa Barbara Museum of Art. She moved to New Mexico in 1919, and then to Cathedral City in 1926, which provided her with the stark environment she desired. Pelton became acquainted with the leader of the Transcendental Painting Group, Raymond Jonson, and by 1933, was corresponding with him regularly. She participated in several exhibits with the group.
