Apart from a tiny loss in the lower left corner of "Medea und Jason" and a faint small spot on the hip of Paris, in impeccable condition. Mostly trimmed to the plate mark Erläuterungen / Comments Als komplette Folge in dieser Kombination von vorzüglicher Druckqualität. As a complete series in this combination of excellent print quality. Condition and homogeneity of the greatest rarity. Among the Nuremberg Little Masters, it was above all Pencz who repeatedly engaged with subjects from ancient history and mythology. His grouping of four strong women from Greek antiquity varies in a highly innovative way the pictorial tradition of the "Neun Heldinnen" known since the late Middle Ages, even though three of his protagonists—Medea, Prokris, and Oinone—end as tragic figures. Medea gives Jason the household gods out of love, but later cruelly avenges her husband's infidelity by murdering their sons and her rival Glauke. Prokris, who spies on her husband Kephalos during the hunt, is struck by her husband's arrow and thus becomes a victim of her own jealousy. The nymph Oinone, despite the love vows Paris carved into tree bark, is abandoned by him for Helena. Struck by a poisoned arrow of Heracles, she helps him too late to prevent his death. Only Tomyris, the queen of the Massagetae, remains victorious over the Persian king Cyrus. With the collector's stamp of K.F.F. von Nagler (Lugt 2529) (1x) and both with (cancellation) stamps of Kupferstichkabinett Berlin on verso.

    Dec. 12, 2024

Georg Pencz - The battle of Cartagena - 1539

    Est: €300 - €400

Probably the largest print made by Georg Pencz who was known as one of the small masters due to their work on a very small surface. The battle of Cartagena; Roman soldiers in foreground storming a large military fortification with rounded towers at left using ladders. Engraving made by Georg Pencz in 1538 after a lost drawing by Guilio Romano for tapestries for King Francis I showing the Triumph of Scipio Africanus following the capture of Cartagena. This engraving provides important evidence of Pencz's association with Giulio Romano (c. 1499-1546) in Mantua when he visited Italy in 1539-40. This is an impression from the 18th century with the address of Carlo Losi. A large and impressive work.
