                    Est: $2,700 - $3,000

ARTIST: EDWARD PENFIELD (1866-1925) SIZE: 10 1/8 x 14 in./25.7 x 35.5 cm PRINTER: DESCRIPTION: Edward Penfield's self-portrait—paintbrush in hand, cap on head, pipe in mouth, and cat waiting to step upon the sheet—adorns the cover of this wonderful poster calendar for 1897. There's a debutante, corsage in her hands, for the balls of the early year; an expectant girl, cradling a smiling cat, for the springtime; a gentleman and companion strolling in the summer countryside; and four ladies-in-waiting, waiting, waiting out the close of the year in a carriage with books in hand. It’s a truly lovely collection of Penfield's quiet and concentrated studies. This lot consists of the cover plus four sheets: the complete set. (5) (Art Nouveau; Literary; American; Animals; Cats)

This is a classic example: the woman in her summer rocking-chair keeps herself from us—by way of a hat, her chair turned away from us, and her eyes in her Harper's. The page, though, is solicitously turned toward us. Would she mind if we read over her shoulder? (Art Nouveau; Literary; American)

                    Est: $1,000 - $1,200

ARTIST: EDWARD PENFIELD (1866-1925) SIZE: 9 1/8 x 10 in./23.2 x 25.4 cm PRINTER: DESCRIPTION: An artist, portfolio tucked neatly under his arm, stands on the boardwalk of an empty strand, seemingly oblivious to the world around him as he ruminates over his next endeavor. Penfield made his first visit to Holland the year this poster was created, and were it not for the absence of the artist’s mustache, one can imagine this piece to be an autobiographical slice-of-life, capturing Penfield meditating on the influence the Dutch travels would have on his early 20th century designs. Case in point: this coachman with the less-than-accommodating expression. The power of the design comes from its unspoken narrative and a curiosity as to what could have transpired to put that look of disdain on his face. Est: $1,200 - $1,500

ARTIST: EDWARD PENFIELD (1866-1925) SIZE: 12 1/4 x 11 3/8 in./31 x 29 cm PRINTER: DESCRIPTION: The most intriguing aspect of many Penfield designs is what the artist chooses to withhold from the viewer. It’s almost as if he gives us a well-executed framework which allows us to create a unique story around the image. Here, it’s unclear what the relationship is between the woman at the reins and the gentleman doffing his boater to her as he waits, suitcase in hand, at a trolley stop. There are several scenarios which could play themselves out, but no matter what tale evolves, it’s certain that the couple has attracted each other’s attention, and in the process, engaged the curiosity of the passersby. Powers Litho., New York DESCRIPTION: While similar in graphic tone, dimensions, and composition to his Y.W.C.A. poster (see PAI-LXXX, 109), Penfield's emotive force is dramatically different here. The text reads, "They are struggling against starvation and trying to feed not only themselves and children: but their husbands and sons who are fighting in the trenches." In 1918, the United States Food Administration published the book "Food Saving and Sharing: Telling How the Older Children of America May Help Save From Famine Their Comrades in Allied Lands Across the Sea." In France, the authors wrote, "the Germans set to work deliberately to do as much harm as possible," destroying fruit trees and vineyards, poisoning wells, and burning houses. The contrast between the American women on their horses (in the YWCA poster) and the French women dragging the plough could not be more stark. (War & Propaganda; Artist: Penfield; American)
