Five small works on paper including pen and ink, watercolor Nd graphite, all on paper. Two are signed and dated, the largest (4.5 x 7.25 in.) dated 1840 and the cows (4 x 6.5 in.) dated 1837. Matted collage style, others measure apprxÂ 5 x 3, 3.5 x 3 and 4 x 5.5 in. Penley became a member of theÂ New Water Colour Society in 1838. He was watercolour-painter in ordinary to William IV and Queen Adelaide. Condition:, matted and secured under plastic sheets, light toning to paper, some visible creases, as found, and is.

Provenance: Roseberys, London, 22 March 2022, lot 101. Private Collection, UK. Note: Penley, not to be confused with his nephew Edwin Aaron Penley (1826-1893), was a prominent watercolourist, serving as watercolour-painter in ordinary to William IV (1765-1837) and his wife, Queen Adelaide (1792-1849). He also authored a number of publications on the medium, including the 'English School of Painting in Watercolours' (1861), 'A System of Watercolour Painting' (1867), and 'Sketching from Nature in Watercolours' (1869). Although he also produced genre scenes, Penley largely produced views of the British countryside, with the present work a classic example of his atmospheric landscapes, with a haziness suggested by the wispy clouds which form around the dramatic cliff face to the centre of the scene.

Provenance: Private Collection, UK. Note: Penley was a highly distinguished painter of landscapes, portraits and miniatures, and was the official watercolour-painter in ordinary to William IV and Queen Adelaide. He painted a miniature of Queen Victoria from a sitting in 1840, today held in the Londonâs National Portrait Gallery [NPG4108], and taught Victoria's son Prince Arthur to paint. He exhibited at Londonâs Royal Academy from 1835 to 1857 and was a member of the Royal Institute of Painters in Water-colour. Please refer to department for condition report
