(b Philadelphia, Pennsylvania 1857; d Brooklyn Heights, New York 1926) American painter. Known as an illustrator, painter, etcher, and teacher, Joseph Pennell was trained at the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts and the Pennsylvania School of Industrial Art. His early work, inspired by Whistler, was mainly etching. Pennell moved to London where he lived and painted until 1917. Later in his life, he lived in Brooklyn and painted many views of New York and New York Harbor.
