Chr.) das Gedächtnis mit einer Wachstafel, deren Oberfläche die Spuren des Erlebens aufnimmt. Im vorliegenden Werk von Giuseppe Penone hinterlässt das Abbrennen einer Zündschnur eine Spur zwischen zwei Wachstafeln. Die Hitzespur bleibt nach dem Aufklappen der Tafeln beidseits als symmetrische Linie sichtbar. Der Abschnitt vom Anfang bis zum Ende der abgebrannten Zündschnur wird zu einem Bild der verrinnenden, gelebten und erinnerten Zeit. Penone formulierte seine Folgerungen für die Skulptur wie folgt: "Die Skulptur ist Gedächtnis / Das Gedächtnis, die Wachstafel in der Seele ist die vorherbestehende Form, das Negativ, das von der Erinnerung an das Erlebte aufgerufen wird." (In: Dieter Schwarz, S. 68). In Plato's dialogue "Theaitetos", the Greek philosopher Socrates (469-399 BC) compared memory to a wax tablet whose surface records the traces of experience. In the present work by Giuseppe Penone, the burning of a fuse leaves a trace between two wax tablets. After opening the tablets, the heat trace remains visible on both sides as a symmetrical line. The section from the beginning to the end of the burnt fuse becomes an image of passing, lived, and remembered time. In the work created in 1970-71, from which this book was then produced, the artist photographed a small glass pressed against different parts of his body until he recorded his entire anatomy; the body fragments (more than a hundred) were then reassembled into a grid of tiny projections that map his personal landscape. 4to (217 x 210mm). Signed, dated and numbered 2/7 in felt-tip pen and ink on the fifth panel. Provenance: Galerie Durand-Dessert, Paris; private collection, New York. Penone (born 1947) is an Italian artist and sculptor, born in Garessio. During his long career, he has become a leading Arte Povera artist, and has explored a variety of media. Penone's early perfomance works involved the natural degradation of his small man-made structures and objects placed in the forests near Garessio. Penone continued creating and performing works encompassing the natural world throughout his career. The current work was created using chlorophyll as ink printed on and mounted with natural materials. Recalling Penone's earlier exploration of natural deterioration, this multiple transforms raw materials into a meditation on the essence of the medium and ultimately, impermanance.
