Original Vintage Santa Fe Railroad Poster c1950 - Hopiland by Don Perceval

Santa Fe Railway was founded in 1859. The company helped settle the mid-west in the later part of the 19th Century by selling real estate and farm land sanctioned by Congress. They became the second transcontinental railway to exist and expanded further with north-south routes in California. Santa Fe had a robust freight business and expanded its transportation reach with a bussing system. The company was featured in a 1945 song, "On the Atchison, Topeka and the Santa Fe" sung by Judy Garland for the film “The Harvey Girls.” In 1996, the railway merged with the Burlington Northern Railway to form the Burlington Northern & Santa Fe Railway. In this 1950's image, we view a native American of the Hopi tribe . The poster was created by Don Perceval (1908 - 1979) using the imagery of his original design called Buffalo Dancer. Perceval was born in England but moved to the United States and first travelled to Arizona in 1927 and became enamored of Hopi and Navajo Indians and their way of life and traditions. He spent the bulk of his time in the United states in the West and settled in California. This is an Original Vintage Poster; it is not a reproduction. Featured in this lot is this color offset of "The Street Fight" originally by Don Perceval born in 1908 and died in 1979 (with this print being copyrighted by John D. Gilchriese and explained by John Gilchriese; Provenance: From the Tombstone Western Heritage Museum in Tombstone, Arizona. The Street Fight - October 26, 1881, Tombstone, Arizona Territory is the official title of this color offset print made from a painting by Don Perceval (1908-1979) of the infamous Gunfight at the OK Corral. This painting is said to have once hung in the Wyatt Earp Museum in Tombstone, and shows the setting as recalled and sketched by Wyatt Earp in his later years. The print shows a copyright by John D. Gilchriese of 1966 in the lower right corner. The condition of this diagram demonstration of the O.K. Corral gunfight is good with no obvious signs of damage and shows a good overall condition. The measurements of this framed diagram and explanation is 25 1/4" x 41 1/4" and the visible diagram and explanation measures 14" x 30 5/8". The collective weight of this framed diagram and explanation is 9lb 4oz.

Title is Navajo Riders. 16" by 20" unframed. 21" by 25" framed. Oil on Canvas. Don Louis Perceval (1908 - 1979) was active/lived in California. Don Perceval is known for Western scene and desert landscape painting, illustration. Born in Woodford, Essex, England, Don Perceval became a noted Southwest painter of landscape and its dwellers. His art talent was encouraged by his mother, a recognized painter in England. His family moved to Los Angeles, California where he was raised, and he became fascinated by the early history of the state. He attended the Pasadena Military Academy and Chouinard Art School where he was a student of Nelbert Chouinard and F.T. Chamberlain. By age 19, he was making sketching trips into the desert, and in 1927 was first in Arizona where he became enamored of Hopi and Navajo Indians and their way of life and traditions. He began illustrating books and became an expert in the history of cattle brands and horsemen's equipment. In his late 20s, he returned to England to study at Heatherly Art School and the Royal College of Art. Here he was exposed for the first time to great collections of paintings and was inspired by classic art. He also went to Madrid, Spain for four years, and then returned to the Southwest where he did advertising for the Rio Grande Oil Company. During World War II, he served in the Royal Navy patrolling the Thames Estuary and teaching gunnery, which he did with much acclaim by using cartoons. He then returned to California. At the advice of Millard Sheets, he taught at Chouinard Art School and Pomona College, where he organized the centennial celebration of the school. In 1952, he lived in Arizona with the Hopi Tribe and in Tucson from 1954 to 1959 where he grew to love the paintings of Maynard Dixon. He illustrated numerous children's books including for writers Ann Nolan Clark and Will Hayes. He spent his last years in Santa Barbara.

A British-born artist, Perceval moved to Los Angeles as a child, with his artist mother. The Street Fight - October 26, 1881, Tombstone, Arizona Territory is the official title of this color offset print made from a painting by Don Perceval (1908-1979) of the infamous Gunfight at the OK Corral. This painting is said to have once hung in the Wyatt Earp Museum in Tombstone, and shows the setting as recalled and sketched by Wyatt Earp in his later years. The print shows a copyright by John D. DON PERCEVAL (1908-1979) ARIZONA / SANTA FE. 23 1/2x17 1/2 inches, 59 3/4x44 1/2 cm. Condition A-: minor restoration in corners. Framed. A British-born artist, Perceval moved to Los Angeles as a child, with his artist mother. He was an accomplished artist of Hopi and Navajo subjects, and also completed commercial work for the Santa Fe Railroad.

Original Vintage Santa Fe Railroad Poster c1950 - Hopiland by Don Perceval

Santa Fe Railway was founded in 1859. The company helped settle the mid-west in the later part of the 19th Century by selling real estate and farm land sanctioned by Congress. They became the second transcontinental railway to exist and expanded further with north-south routes in California. Santa Fe had a robust freight business and expanded its transportation reach with a bussing system. The company was featured in a 1945 song, "On the Atchison, Topeka and the Santa Fe" sung by Judy Garland for the film "The Harvey Girls." In 1996, the railway merged with the Burlington Northern Railway to form the Burlington Northern & Santa Fe Railway. In this 1950's image, we view a native American of the Hopi tribe . The poster was created by Don Perceval (1908 - 1979) using the imagery of his original design called Buffalo Dancer. Perceval was born in England but moved to the United States and first travelled to Arizona in 1927 and became enamored of Hopi and Navajo Indians and their way of life and traditions. He spent the bulk of his time in the United states in the West and settled in California. This is an Original Vintage Poster; it is not a reproduction.
