Landscape painter, b. 1821 - d. 1886

Despite a lack of formal training, Sidney Richard Percy was an accomplished 19th century landscape painter who presented his work at the Royal Academy and various other British venues. Sidney Percy was an artist born in London in 1822 and a member of the well-known Williams family of artists, which included his brothers and father; this was the reason he changed his last name.

Sidney Richard Percy’s paintings focused on countryside scenes throughout the United Kingdom, with particular attention paid to the way the sky and clouds interacted with the earth. As his career progressed, Sidney Percy became an artist who was celebrated by members of the English high society, including Queen Victoria. Some of his most famous work includes Herding the Cattle, Glen Falloch, and A Mountain Pass. He was the fifth son of painter Edward Williams, from whom he received his training.To distinguish himself within his prolific family, he adopted the name "Percy" from around age 20. He exhibited widely, including at the Royal Academy, the British Institution, and the Society of British Artists.Early in his career, he painted the rural scenery around Barnes, but later sought inspiration in the dramatic landscapes of North Wales, Yorkshire, the Lake District, and Scotland. He was especially renowned for his atmospheric scenes of cattle grazing, characterized by meticulous geological detail, earthy tones, and soft, pastel accents. Percy worked as a landscape painter, depicting the countryside across the United Kingdom, drawing particular inspiration from the landscape of Northern Wales, Yorkshire, Devon, and the Scottish Highlands.  Percy enjoyed the support of a number of prominent contemporaries, including Prince Albert (1819-1861), who bought one of his works, 'A view of Llyn Dulyn, North Wales', as a gift for Queen Victoria (1819-1901) in 1854. This painting, which remains in the Royal Collection [RCIN 403653] shares many similarities with the present work, both depicting cattle set against the towering Highland mountains beyond. The present work, however, employs an especially bright palette, with the light orange tones of the sun illuminating the landscape and the blue skies above, and imparting the work with a particular sense of optimism and vitality.
