Born in Illinois in 1876, American artist Jane Peterson began her debut in the art world as a young student at the renowned Pratt Institute in Brooklyn. She later attended New York's Art Students League, where she would eventually teach watercolor painting. Wanting to expand her artistic education, she then set off for a European tour which would greatly influence future Peterson paintings, as she studied under fellow artists like Joaquín Sorolla. Peterson's paintings largely feature floral still lifes or impressionistic landscapes and harbor scenes from the Pacific Northwest. Peterson's unique combination of painting techniques and stylistic choices has helped her become one of the most well known female artists in America, making it hard to find Jane Peterson still life paintings on sale. NY, Santa Fe East, Santa Fe, NM (with title listed as Venice Street Scene and Summer (Venice) Street Scene respectively), lined. 24 1/2 x 18 1/2 in., 29 3/4 x 23 3/4 in. (frame). Note: In the summer of 1909, Jane Peterson arrived in Madrid for six months of study with the acclaimed Spanish Impressionist Joaquin Sorolla y Bastida. American artist Francis Hopkinson Smith, whom Peterson met while in Venice, saw an affinity between Peterson's work and that of the Spanish master, brokering an introduction that led to her period of study in Spain. Peterson lived with Sorolla and his family and worked side-by-side with her mentor whose use of color and spontaneity of brushstroke was similar to hers and would become her signature style. The subject of this painting is listed as Venice on the gallery labels affixed to the frame, however, the church tower in the background is clearly Esglesia de Sant Nicolau in Palma where she likely painted during her sojourn in Spain.
