RESTING BY THE LAKE, EDMOND MARIE PETITJEAN (FRENCH, 1844–1925) Oil on Canvas, Signed Bottom Left Painted in oil on canvas, this expansive lakeside composition is rendered in Petitjean’s characteristic luminous palette and precise handling. The foreground is animated by a group of figures resting along the shore, their bright garments—pinks, blues, and ochres—contrasting against the muted earth tones of the terrain. A camel kneels nearby beneath a draped cloth, while further back a domed stone structure occupies a rise overlooking the water. The middle distance shows a camel caravan traversing the shoreline, gradually receding toward hazy mountains beneath a pale, serene sky. Fine craquelure and a soft varnish sheen are visible across the painted surface, consistent with age. The reverse reveals an older stretcher with a central vertical support and a canvas showing uniform age-toning and scattered areas of discolouration. The gilt frame, with moulded outer edges, exhibits rubbing and small nicks around its perimeter.
