Raymond Pettibon Sold at Auction Prices

b. 1957 -

(b Tucson, Arizona, 1957) American artist. The fertile yet undefined shores of Long Beach, California provide the philosophical and aesthetic foundation for Raymond Pettibon. Having earned a degree in Economics from UCLA, spending time as a mathematics teacher, and possessing a library shelf that contains the disparate musings of authors from Henry James to Marcel Proust, Pettibon's impressive body of work resists any strict ontological categorization. His imagery meanders and gleans across subjects, words and reference points, and is as likely to address sporting or cartoon subjects as issues of sexuality, politics or Nineteenth-century literature. While primarily a visual artist, Pettibon gained popularity for his association with Los Angeles’s punk-rock culture. Pettibon’s subject matter is wide-ranging, but most of his work encompasses text and drawing and recalls comic book illustration. Pettibon’s drawings embody themes of rebellion against authority and are heavily satirical of contemporary American culture. Major retrospectives of Pettibon’s work have been held at The Museum of Contemporary Art, Los Angeles and the Philadelphia Museum of Art. His work has also been exhibited internationally in Kassell, Tokyo, and Barcelona. (Credit: Sotheby’s, New York, Contemporary Art Day Sale, May 11, 2006, Lot 543).

PETTIBON, RAYMOND 1957 Tucson/Arizona/USA Title: Untitled (Justly felt and brilliantly said) (for Parkett 47). Date: 1996. Technique: Silkscreen, partially painted in watercolours, with handwritten text and pressed blossom on Arches. In portfolio. Depiction Size: 24,5 x 19,5cm. Sheet Size: 24,5 x 194cm. Notation: Signed, dated and numbered. Publisher: Parkett-Verlag, Zurich (publisher). Number: 1/60. Condition: Minimal bumpings to the margins and corners of the leaflet. Otherwise the work is in very good condition. The additions in watercolours and the handwritten texts of the 10-part leaflet vary with each copy of the edition, thus every artwork is a one of a kind. With Parkett magazin. "By placing texts in unique, single drawings, Pettibon has found a means of surmounting his intrinsic difficulty and revealing the aesthetic potential of 'bad' commercial mass literature within the framework of his art. Pettibon is not the only artist over the past few decades to pursue such ends in incorporating texts in his work; others have also grasped this opportunity - both literally and figuratively. (.) His pictures serve the interests of poetry, which - given the hegemony of the mechanically-printed word in current culture - cannot afford the appropriations and recontextualizations which have already become standard practice in art."
