Vintage oil on canvas painting after "The Vigil" by Scottish painter John Pettie, exhibited in 1884. No signature found. Stamp present on back. Ca. early to mid 20th Century. The painting depicts a squire kneeling in prayer before an altar, conducting a night-long vigil to prepare for his upcoming knighthood ceremony. He is shown in a grand architectural interior, dressed in white robes and a red cape, holding his sword upright.

Provenance: Mrs Max Lindar, who gifted it to The Worshipful Company Of Musicians John Pettie studied in Edinburgh where he met William Taggart. He later shared a studio with William Quiller Orchardson in London. He was elected a Royal Academician in 1873. St Cecilia was a Christian Martyr and became the patroness of music and musicians. Musical compositions are dedicated to her, and her feast, on 22 November, is the occasion of concerts and musical festivals. Sold by the Worshipful Company of Musicians to benefit their musical philanthropy. Through this auction, at no cost to the Livery, the Company hopes to make a number of their awards financially secure for the future. The Musicians' Livery Company is an ancient one, currently with four hundred members, made up of musicians, both professional and amateur and those who simply love music. In 1604 James I granted a Royal Charter to the Musician's Livery Company, whose roots date back to at least 1350. Dedicated to the Performing Arts, the company today supports young and early career musicians through the Musicians Company Charity, offering scholarships, bursaries and awards to talented young artists to study at leading conservatories and universities. In the 19th century the Musicians Company placed musical philanthropy at its core. Today, as the only Livery Company dedicated to the Performing Arts, the Company remains committed to preserving musical excellence in the United Kingdom now and in the future. Through the Musicians Company Charity, its primary mission is to support young and early-career musicians as they pursue further education and build their careers in what is a very challenging environment and an increasingly demanding industry. Through its Young Artists Programme, it offers performance opportunities at festivals and concerts across the UK, teaching opportunities in schools and community settings, and professional development through workshops and talks with industry partners. However, its biggest focus is on offering scholarships, bursaries and awards so that talented young musicians, regardless of their background, can learn from the finest teachers in conservatoires, universities, and specialist music schools across the UK. Recognising the significant financial burden on young musicians, the Company provides over 100 awards each year, some through its own competitions and others in collaboration with conservatoires, university departments and military schools of music.The Company's support spans a wide range of genres in performance and composition, with equal commitment to classical music, jazz, popular music and brass bands.Over the last five years, the Musicians Company has reviewed the operation of its awards and the finances that have supported it, in order to protect the longer-term stability of its support to young musicians. One of the outcomes was a recommendation to sell some of the Company's assets which are neither used nor displayed, and which have been in storage for many years because of their value. This recommendation came about because, if it is to continue to spend in excess of £400,000 a year on charitable activities - the Awards to young musicians and Young Artists Programmes - it needs to boost its charitable funds. At the moment, in this difficult financial market, the Company is having to use some capital as well as the annual return from its investments. That cannot continue and so they have looked at ways to enhance capital.

Attributed to John Pettie (1839-1893), Oil on canvas, The famous Paris Duel or The Duel after the Masquerade , Labelled to slip lower middle, 20 x 30''. The scene is set on a grey winter morning in the Bois de Boulogne, trees bare and snow covering the ground. A man dressed as a Perriot has been mortally wounded in a duel and has collapsed into the arms of a Duc de Guise . A surgeon, dressed as a Doge of Venice , tries to stop the flow of blood, while a Donio clutches his own head. The survivor of the duel, dressed as an American Indian, walks away with his second, a Harlequin towards his carriage, shown waiting in the background. This actually is supposed to have happened ! Bears remains of Sotheby's numbers verso.
