In 1973, she earned a Master of Fine Arts degree from Yale University, New Haven, Connecticut. Pfaff began her career as a painter, studying with Al Held. She has also been a sculptor and has done installation work for twenty-five years. She is married to photographer Rob van Erve. She has been Art Professor and co-chairman of the Art Department at Bard College, Annadale-on-Hudson, New York. The time came when Pfaff proved that she is as comfortable working in two dimensions as she was in three. She focuses now on the tensions between nature and culture. She is making art that seems designed to frustrate any attempts to characterize it. Her swirling, scribbled forms and flashy, set-your-teeth-on-edge colors give ample reason for causing people to pay attention.
