Le Pho (1907 - 2001) Composition signed (lower right) oil on canvas 39" x 25 1/4" (99 cm x 64 cm) Accompanied by a certificate issued by Wally Findlay Galleries confirming the authenticity of this lot Le Pho, a twentieth-century artist, is the tenth child in a family of twenty of Emperor Le Hoan, born in 1907. He was cultured, well-educated, and trained in brush painting. At eighteen, he was part of the first class of students who attended the French-sponsored Ecole Superieure des Beaux-Arts in Hanoi, directed by Victor Tardieu—a classmate of Matisse and Moreau— between 1925 and 1930. Well-traveled, he promoted his work at galleries worldwide. Le Pho settled in France until his death in 2001. Le Pho’s art went through three distinct periods. The strong shifts in subject, medium, and style between them are seen to be a testament to his versatility as an artist. His first period started in Hanoi and stayed until his early years in Paris. Le Pho created landscapes that reminisce his youth in Vietnam, each painting steeped with nostalgia and the historical magnificence of the country. His works in this period were perhaps a homage to the homeland which Le Pho left behind. Then, his Romanet Period came to light when he met a gallery owner who became his major promoter. The period was named after the French man, and it would last until the 1960s. After some time, Le Pho signed a contract with the American gallerist Wally Findlay who introduced his works to the American market. This would mark the beginning of his final artistic period, also known as Findlay Period. His canvases, mostly painted in oil, were inhabited by Vietnamese women with elongated figures surrounded by lush landscapes. Le Pho pursued his Findlay Period with enthusiasm as he painted with a bright palette, depicting his usual muses and floral still life. As observed in this oil piece, his subjects are set in a vibrant background of predominant yellow, and the ambiance brings out a level of appeal and delight to the viewers. (Isabella Romarate)

Le Pho Oil on Silk Painting, Jeunes Filles aux Bouquets

              Est: $88,000 - $92,000

Le Pho (Vietnam/France, 1907-2001) oil painting on silk mounted on masonite titled "Jeunes Filles aux Bouquets," c. 1950s. The painting depicts three young women among vases filled with flowers, before a golden-yellow background. The figures at left and center carefully arrange the bouquets while the figure at right turns her back to the viewer as she gazes into the distance. Signed "Le Pho" in cursive and Chinese, lower right. With Arthur Lenars & Cie., Paris, shipping label addressed to Wally Findlay Galleries, Chicago, en verso. (Findlay is the American gallery most closely associated with Le Pho). Housed in a carved, giltwood Louis XIV-style frame with fabric mat and brass title/nameplate. With title inscribed en verso along with Lenars shipping label addressed to "FIND 93 CHICAGO." Numbered en verso "4722," upper left, and "No. 3," upper right. Board: 23" H x 35 3/4" W. Frame: 30 1/4" H x 43" W. Biographical note: Le Pho is celebrated for his unique style of painting, blending European influences including Impressionism and Post-Impressionism with Asian artistic traditions, especially Chinese painting. He was among the earliest graduates of the Indochina Fine Arts College, now Vietnam University of Fine Arts, which was set up in 1925 by French painter Victor Tardieu, a friend and colleague of Henri Matisse. Le Pho received a scholarship to study at the Paris National College of Fine Arts. In 1932 he returned to Vietnam to teach before setting off for Beijing, where he became immersed in Chinese artistic traditions. When he left China he had the artistic knowledge needed to develop his own particular artistic style with which he would make his name in France. By 1950, now living in Paris, Le Pho began working in oil on canvas, striking a delicate balance between Chinese painting and French Post-Impressionism. Yet the images he painted focus on traditional Vietnamese subject matter like bamboo branches, birds and especially women with flowers or wearing ao dai. (Adapted from Vietnam News Agency). Note: This painting was featured on Antiques Roadshow in 2014, evaluated by Colleene Fesko, season 20 episode 28. This lot is accompanied by a certificate of authenticity from The Findlay Institute. The present work is highly demonstrative of Le Pho's so-called "Findlay period," the final stylistic phase of his career, marked by his 1963 partnership with American dealer Wally Findlay. The working relationship between Le Pho and Findlay was notably symbiotic. Aiming to expand the artist's presence on the American market, Findlay aggressively promoted Le Pho's work and encouraged some modification of his practice, catering specifically to these new collectors. These adjustments materialized in the form of a brighter color palette of oil paints rendered in stronger brushwork, a departure from Le Pho's softer paintings on silk, resulting in the more lush and saturated appearance of the present work. A supremely versatile artist, Le Pho beautifully translated his favorite themes of bouquets and Vietnamese women across the different media, incorporating Findlay's suggestions while retaining his own signature aesthetic. The combined efforts of Le Pho and Findlay met with great success, with the artist's work now residing in notable American collections with varieties of focus including contemporary European and American art, post-war French art, and 20th century Asian art.
