Piepenhagen's paintings are not of a particular natural setting; he painted not en plein air but at home in his studio, drawing his subjects from contemporary prints, for example by Claude Lorrain (1600-1682), whose second edition of Liber veritatis was published in graphic reproductions in Rome in 1815 and made an immediate impact on the whole of Central European landscape painting, influenced Piepenhagen's work of the 1820s quite clearly. At that time, in the name of high romanticism, Piepenhagen composed and paraphrased views of forest lakes with full-moon reflection on the water surface, distant views of mountain valleys, shots of picturesque forest thickets, mountain streams, but also rocky night landscapes. It was in the 1940s and 1950s that Piepenhagen tirelessly paraphrased similar topics in different periods and times of day, landscapes abandoned and revived by a lone pilgrim or fisherman. We find similar motifs in the artist's swatches, which he sent out through his friends for demonstrations and accepted orders based on them. The presented counterparts, Landscape with a Ruin and Moonlit Night, are very beautiful examples of Piepenhagen's special painting mastery.
