C'est Jean-Baptiste Pigalle qui fut choisi pour en être l'auteur. Enthousiasmé par cette prestigieuse commande, le sculpteur partit sans tarder pour Ferney accompagné de son mouleur afin de faire le portrait d'après nature du philosophe. Après huit jours de travail et de tentatives infructueuses, Pigalle réussit enfin à modeler le portrait de l'écrivain dans la terre crue. Il fit mouler sans tarder son œuvre et revint à Paris avec le moule. Dès son retour, il en tira un plâtre original qu'il présenta dans son atelier aux souscripteurs. Grimm, qui faisait partie de ses commanditaires, en fit alors cette description : " Pigalle lui a fait la tête droite, dans la statue elle sera même relevée et le regard tourné vers le haut. D'ailleurs le plâtre de Pigalle est simple, calme et d'un beau caractère, seulement je trouve qu'il a le regard un peu mélancolique, et comme s'il était travaillé par le spleen (1) ". Le buste approuvé par les commanditaires, Pigalle se mit au travail et sculpta le grand Voltaire nu daté 1776 aujourd'hui conservé au musée du Louvre (Inv. ENT 1962.01). Cette œuvre suscita un jugement pour le moins mitigé et fut longtemps incomprise. Cet accueil compliqué pourrait expliquer en partie que le buste préparatoire à ce monument si décrié, ne fit pas l'objet de tirages ou d'édition connue, faisant de notre buste une très grande rareté. Nous avons présenté dans nos salles une autre version que nous avions alors proposé de considérer comme étant le plâtre original disparu (voir vente anonyme ; Paris, Artcurial, 18 novembre 2014, n° 47). Ce dernier diffère de notre version par son ampleur et le traitement du vêtement. Ici, Voltaire est traité moins intimement, il est plus majestueux ainsi vêtu à l'antique, reprenant les grands canons esthétiques des bustes classiques en marbre. Notre plâtre plein de vérité et de vie, s’il compte quelques variantes par rapport au marbre du Louvre, peut être clairement rapproché du buste en bronze, sans doute fondu par Pierre Philippe Thomire, élève et fondeur des œuvres de Pigalle, aujourd'hui conservé au LACMA à Los Angeles ainsi qu’à la gravure qu’en fit Thomas Holloway en 1788. 1. Bronze sculpture signed by Jean-Baptiste Pigalle representing the Renaissance philosopher and writer Michel de Montaigne, author of "Essays" and inventor of the essay genre. He appears here characterized as a humanist with an aristocratic countenance, a ruffed collar, and an open book on his lap. Jean-Baptiste Pigalle was a French sculptor. Born into a family of cabinetmakers, he learned sculpture from Robert Le Lorrain and Jean-Baptiste Lemoyne. He was mainly influenced by Edmé Bouchardon. He moved to Italy from 1734 to 1737. Considered a great master by his contemporaries, his work stylistically straddles the baroque and neoclassical periods. One of his best known works is "Mercury tying his sandals", preserved in the Louvre Museum.
