The Jockey Club; Or a Sketch of the Manners of the Age

        Est: $500 - $800

3 volumes. (8vo) 20.5x13 cm (8x5¼") period full calf, red morocco spine labels. Eleventh, Sixth, and Second Editions respectively.

A beautiful set of this fantasy of the turf, an attack on the decadent behaviour of the landed gentry. Anonymously published, it was written by the horseflesh-obsessed dilettante and bon vivant Charles Pigott, who outraged the late 18th-century establishment with this gleeful exposé of the decadence and scandals of the aristocratic Jockey Club. His victims are disguised only by the most transparent abbreviations. Apart from Thomas Paine, of whom he was fond, a seemingly endless stream of notables including Burke and Fox are all savaged in a work which bought Pigott fame, but also persecution. The book was an enormous success: the eleventh edition was issued in the same year as the first.
