JOAN HERNÁNDEZ PIJUAN (Barcelona, 1931 - 2005). Untitled, 1987. Mixed media on handmade paper. Signed in the lower margin. Measurements: 93 x 184 cm; 117 x 210 cm (frame). This work by Hernández Pijuan, made in 1987, perfectly represents his exploration of pictorial language as a way of essential reduction and poetic contemplation. Two plant stems with a subtle outline float on a luminous ochre background, an apparently minimal composition that contains a profound reflection on space, memory and time. In the eighties, Pijuan dedicated a significant part of his production to the theme of the garden and nature, a recurring motif in his work that he used as an exercise in formal and conceptual purification. The image is resolved with an almost calligraphic language, of great oriental influence, in which gesture and emptiness acquire a crucial weight. The texture of the handmade paper, with its organic roughness, reinforces the sensation of immediacy and fragility, generating an atmosphere of balance between the material and the immaterial. This work is an example of the constant dialogue between abstraction and figurative reference in Pijuan's work. Here, the plant forms appear stripped of all superfluous detail, reduced to their purest essence. The absence of artifice and chromatic sobriety turn the image into a space of silence and meditation, a characteristic feature of his production at this stage. The use of monochrome backgrounds and extreme synthesis refer to his particular way of understanding painting, where the visual experience becomes an act of introspection. Joan Hernández Pijuan is one of the key figures of contemporary Spanish painting. His work moves from an initial expressionism to an increasingly refined language, in which formal reduction and the exploration of space acquire an absolute protagonism. His training at La Lonja, the Sant Jordi School of Fine Arts in Barcelona and the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris marked his beginnings, but his true recognition would come in the seventies, when his work acquired a more conceptual and spiritual dimension. Throughout his career, Pijuan was a professor and dean of the Faculty of Fine Arts at the University of Barcelona, as well as a member of the Royal Academy of San Fernando in Madrid. His importance in Spanish art was consolidated with awards such as the National Prize for Plastic Arts (1981), the Sant Jordi Cross (1985) and the City of Barcelona Prize (2004). His work has been the subject of major national and international exhibitions, most notably the retrospective at the MACBA in Barcelona in 2003, which subsequently traveled to France, Sweden and Italy. He has also participated in biennials and exhibitions in Zurich, Milan, New York, Paris, Amsterdam, Osaka, Buenos Aires and Johannesburg, establishing himself as a reference in European abstract and conceptual art. Currently, his work is represented in major international collections and museums, including the Museo Nacional Centro de Arte Reina Sofía, the MACBA, the Museo de Arte Abstracto Español de Cuenca and the Museo Patio Herreriano de Valladolid. Internationally, his work is part of institutions such as the Guggenheim in New York, the Museum of Contemporary Art in Helsinki, the National Gallery in Montreal, the Museum of Modern Art in Buenos Aires and the Kulturstiftung in Austria, among many others. The current boom in Hernández Pijuan's market is due to his ability to create works of great emotional depth through an economy of means, making him an essential artist in the contemporary art scene.

Joan Hernández Pijuan begins his formation in Barcelona, attending the Schools of La Lonja and Fine Arts of Sant Jordi, to later complete his formation in the School of Fine Arts of Paris. Appointed professor at the Faculty of Fine Arts in Barcelona in 1981, Hernández Pijuan occupies a unique position among the Spanish artists of the last decades. He began his career practicing a tragic expressionism of great social charge, and in these times he formed, together with the rest of the members of the Sílex Group, the so-called Barcelona School. In the seventies he simplified his expression until he adopted a geometric and calculated figuration, a style that he left behind in the following decade to focus on informalism. His exhibition activity was as wide and diverse as his own artistic creation. During his lifetime he exhibited individually in several Spanish cities as well as in Zurich, Milan, Johannesburg, Cologne, Geneva, New York, Paris and Osaka, among other cities around the world, and in 2003 a major retrospective exhibition was dedicated to him at the MACBA in Barcelona, which was later shown at the Musée d'Art et Histoire de Neuchatel (France), the Konsthalle in Malmö (Sweden) and the Galleria Comunale d'Arte Moderna in Bologna (Italy). Hernández Pijuan was dean of the Faculty of Fine Arts at the University of Barcelona, and in 2000 he was appointed member of the Royal Academy of San Fernando in Madrid. In 1981 he received the National Plastic Arts Award, in 1985 the Sant Jordi Cross and in 2004 the City of Barcelona Award. He was also awarded the Prize of the General Directorate of Fine Arts at the National Exhibition of Alicante in 1957, the First Prize for Painting "Peintres Residents" in Paris (1958), the "Malibor" Prize at the Biennial of Engraving in Ljubljana (1965), the International Biennial of Engraving in Krakow (1966) and the prize of the editorial office "Vijesnik u Srijedu" in Zagreb (1970). JOAN HERNÁNDEZ PIJUAN (Barcelona, 1931 - 2005). "Work", 1989. Gouache and watercolor on paper. Signed and dated in the lower corner. Attached to the back label of the gallery Joan Prats. Measurements: 21 x 31 cm; 43 x 54 cm (frame). Pijuan was a very free artist, who oscillated without prejudice between geometric figuration, informalism and a genuine essentialism. The drawing shown here is part of this last tendency. Joan Hernández Pijuan began his training in Barcelona, attending the Schools of La Lonja and Sant Jordi Fine Arts, and then completed his training at the School of Fine Arts in Paris. Appointed professor at the Faculty of Fine Arts in Barcelona in 1981, Hernández Pijuan occupies a singular position among the Spanish artists of the last decades. The strength of his creative individuality places him at the margin of the successive dominant trends and fashions, but does not prevent us from recognizing in his work a profound identification with the aesthetic concerns of his time. Throughout his career he has produced paintings on canvas, works on paper and aquatint engravings, lithographs and other printmaking techniques. Hernández Pijuan began his career practicing a tragic expressionism of great social charge, and at this time he formed, along with the other members of the Sílex Group, the so-called Barcelona School. Either individually or in the company of other artists, Hernández Pijuan provoked an important impact in artistic circles around the world. In fact, the interest and fascination for this painter's career continues more than ever, and he is the subject of new exhibitions and public displays of his work. During his lifetime he exhibited individually in several Spanish cities as well as in Zurich, Milan, Johannesburg, Cologne, Geneva, New York, Paris and Osaka, among other cities around the world, and in 2003 a major retrospective exhibition was dedicated to him at the MACBA in Barcelona, which was subsequently shown at the Musée d'Art et Histoire de Neuchatel (France), the Konsthalle de Malmö (Sweden) and the Galleria Comunale d'Arte Moderna in Bologna (Italy). Even after his death his work has continued to be shown internationally, as evidenced by the exhibitions dedicated to his work held at the Flowers Gallery in London (2006), the Cervantes Institutes in New York, Chicago and Lisbon (2007), the Museum of Spanish Abstract Art in Cuenca (2008), the Andres Thalmann Gallery in Zurich (2009), the Baukunst in Cologne (2010), the Altana Kulturstiftung in Bad Homburg (Germany, 2011) and the Museum of Modern Art in Moscow (2012), among many others. Hernández Pijuan was dean of the Faculty of Fine Arts at the University of Barcelona, and in 2000 he was appointed academician of the Real Academia de San Fernando in Madrid. In 1981 he received the National Plastic Arts Award, in 1985 the Sant Jordi Cross and in 2004 the City of Barcelona Award. This oil on paper belongs to an early stage of the artist in which he was interested in formal simplification, influenced by both avant-garde expressionism and Romanesque art. Presents labels on the back (Joan Prats Gallery / Art Gallery Tàpies). Measurements: 18,5 x 15 cm; 41,5 x 38 cm (frame). Joan Hernández Pijuan painted houses as part of his artistic exploration deeply linked to landscape, memory, and poetic evocation. Houses, as well as other elements such as trees, fields or roads, became recurring symbols in his work, which he reduced to a basic essentiality of naïf or directly abstract dyes. Joan Hernández Pijuan began his training in Barcelona, attending the Schools of La Lonja and Sant Jordi Fine Arts, and then completed his education at the School of Fine Arts in Paris. In 1981 he received the National Prize for Plastic Arts, in 1985 the Sant Jordi Cross and, in 2004, the City of Barcelona Award. Untitled, 1956. Oil on paper adhered to board. Signed, dated and dedicated in the upper left corner. Measurements: 50 x 64 cm; 81 x 97 cm (frame). This oil on paper belongs to an early stage of the artist in which he was interested in formal simplification, influenced by both avant-garde expressionism and Romanesque art. Joan Hernández Pijuan began his training in Barcelona, attending the La Lonja and Sant Jordi Schools of Fine Arts, before completing his studies at the School of Fine Arts in Paris. Appointed professor at the Faculty of Fine Arts in Barcelona in 1981, Hernández Pijuan occupies a unique position among Spanish artists of recent decades. The strength of his creative individuality places him on the fringes of the successive dominant trends and fashions, but does not prevent us from recognising in his work a profound identification with the aesthetic concerns of his time. Hernández Pijuan began his career practising a tragic expressionism with a strong social charge, and at this time he formed, together with the other members of the Sílex Group, the so-called Barcelona School. In the seventies he simplified his expression to the point of adopting geometric figuration, a style he left behind in the following decade to focus on informalism. In fact, interest in and fascination with this painter's career continues to be as strong as ever, and he is the subject of new exhibitions and public displays of his work. During his lifetime he had solo exhibitions in several Spanish cities as well as in Zurich, Milan, Johannesburg, Cologne, Geneva, New York, Paris and Osaka, among other cities around the world, and in 2003 he was the subject of a major retrospective exhibition at the MACBA in Barcelona, which was subsequently shown at the Musée d'Art et Histoire de Neuchatel (France), the Konsthalle de Malmö (Sweden) and the Galleria Comunale d'Arte Moderna in Bologna (Italy). Even after his death his work has continued to be shown internationally, as evidenced by the exhibitions dedicated to his work held at the Flowers Gallery in London (2006), the Cervantes Institutes in New York, Chicago and Lisbon (2007), the Museo de Arte Abstracto Español in Cuenca (2008), the Andres Thalmann Gallery in Zurich (2009), the Baukunst in Cologne (2010), the Altana Kulturstiftung in Bad Homburg (Germany, 2011) and the Museum of Modern Art in Moscow (2012), among many others. Hernández Pijuan was dean of the Faculty of Fine Arts at the University of Barcelona, and in 2000 he was appointed a member of the Real Academia de San Fernando in Madrid. In 1981 he received the Premio Nacional de Artes Plásticas, in 1985 the Cruz de Sant Jordi and, in 2004, the City of Barcelona Prize. He was also awarded the Prize of the Directorate General of Fine Arts at the National Exhibition in Alicante in 1957, the First Prize for Painting "Peintres Residents" in Paris (1958), the "Malibor" Prize at the Ljubljana Biennial of Engraving (1965), the International Biennial of Engraving in Krakow (1966) and the "Vijesnik u Srijedu" editorial prize in Zagreb (1970). Est: €6,000 - €7,000

JOAN HERNÁNDEZ PIJUAN (Barcelona, 1931 - 2005). "Still life", 1969. Oil on canvas. With Sala Gaspar label on the back. Measurements: 46 x 55,5 cm; 48 x 57 cm (frame). In this work Hernández Pijuan takes the classic genre of the still life and gives it an apparently figurative treatment. However, he essentializes the theme and spiritualizes it, giving it a metaphysical cadence. The two eggs seem to float in the void, despite the shelf on which they sit, slightly darker in color than the background. Pijuan echoes here the symbolic charge of baroque still lifes. The eggs could represent the cycle of life and death. Because of their fragility they are a metaphor for the fragility of life. They also symbolize perfection, but also the duality of human nature. The painting could also be seen as a commentary on the nature of art and its power. This work can be related to "Espai marró amb ou" (1970) from the Reina Sofía Museum Collection. Joan Hernández Pijuan began his training in Barcelona, attending the Schools of La Lonja and Fine Arts of Sant Jordi, and then completed his training at the School of Fine Arts in Paris. Appointed professor at the Faculty of Fine Arts in Barcelona in 1981, Hernández Pijuan occupies a singular position among the Spanish artists of the last decades. JOAN HERNÁNDEZ PIJUAN (Barcelona, 1931 - 2005). Hernández Pijuán is represented at the MACBA, the Museum of Spanish Abstract Art in Cuenca, the Reina Sofía in Madrid, the Patio Herreriano Museum in Valladolid and the Basque Museum of Contemporary Art, as well as in foreign centres such as the Guggenheim Museum in New York, the Liaunig (Austria), the Helsinki Museum of Contemporary Art in Helsinki, the Helsinki Museum of Fine Arts in Finland, the Helsinki Museum of Contemporary Art in Finland, the Helsinki Museum of Fine Arts in Finland and the Helsinki Museum of Contemporary Art in Finland, those of Contemporary Art in Helsinki and Luxembourg, the Kulturstiftung in Bad Homburg (Austria), the Yamaguchi Gallery in Osaka (Japan), the Palace of Fine Arts in Brussels, the National Gallery in Montreal, the Museum of Modern Art in Buenos Aires and the Sztuki Museum in Lodz (Poland).
