Il teatro d'Ercolano. Rome: Stamperia Salomoni, 1783. An elegant collection of engravings by Francesco Piranesi, a splendid testimony to Roman theatrical architecture. The volume is dedicated to Gustav III of Sweden (1746-1792), described on the frontispiece as a “most munificent promoter of the fine arts”. Piranesi had begun a correspondence with Baron Carl Fredrik Fredenheim (1748-1803) to obtain an official assignment from the Swedish king, which he obtained in 1783. His assignments had the aim of finding works for the royal collection and of promoting artistic exchanges between Sweden and the Papal State. Folio (527 x 370mm). Half-title, engraved title with dedication to Gustav III of Sweden, 9 double-page plates (small restorations to at center of the plates, occasional light soiling). Modern half-calf on marbled paper, gilt title on spine, blue edges (slight wear). IT Il teatro d'Ercolano. Roma: Stamperia Salomoni, 1783. Elegante raccolta di incisioni di Francesco Piranesi, splendida testimonianza dell'architettura teatrale romana. Il volume è dedicato a Gustavo III di Svezia (1746-1792), definito al frontespizio come “promotore munificientissimo delle belle arti”. Piranesi aveva avviato una corrispondenza con il barone Carl Fredrik Fredenheim (1748-1803) per ottenere un incarico ufficiale dal re svedese, che ottenne nel 1783. I suoi incarichi avevano l'obiettivo di reperire opere per la collezione reale e di favorire gli scambi artistici tra la Svezia e lo Stato Pontificio. Folio (527 x 370mm). Bei dem beeindruckenden Blatt handelt es sich um den Titel der Antiquités de Pompeia aus der Serie der Antiquités de la Grande Grèce... Das umfangreiche Werk, das schließlich drei Bände und über 100 Tafeln umfassen sollte, basierte auf Zeichnungen, die Vater und Sohn bereits 1770-78 während mehrerer Besuche der Ausgrabungen von Pompeji angefertigt hatten. Das Titelblatt zeigt eine Kombination bildhauerischer und architektonischer Elemente Pompejis, aus deren Mitte Flammen lodern, und gibt den dokumentarischen Zweck der Sammlung an: "INCENDIO CONSUMPTUM RESTITUIT". Ganz ausgezeichneter Druck mit Rand um die Plattenkante. With double-page engraved title and 44 (of 49; 29 double-page) copper plates and plans. Folio. Contemporary half leather (heavily rubbed and bumped, joints chipped) with spine label "Antiquites Romaine Supplem(ent)". Francesco Piranesi (ca. 1756-1810), Italian engraver and architect, was the son of the famous Giovanni Battista Piranesi. Like his father, he created etchings of ancient buildings and works of art in the city of Rome. In the eighties and nineties, numerous plates appeared, often based on unpublished models by his father. As staunch Jacobins, Francesco and his brother Pietro had to flee to Paris in 1799, but managed to take all the printing plates from their workshop with them. In Paris they now set up a new workshop, the "Calcographie des Piranesi frères", where from 1800-1807 "a carefully printed new edition of the complete graphic works in twenty-seven volumes was organized" (Wilton/Ely, p. 132).- The present volume 6 of the 27 volumes, which according to the catalog "Regia Calcografia di Roma" consists of the two parts of the "Raccolta de" Tempj Antichi" from 1780 and 1790. The plates partly dated (between 1780-90) and numbered I-XIII, I-VIII, II-VI, X-XXIIII and XXVI-XXVIII in Roman numerals, thus 5 plates missing.- Some foxing in the wide white outer margin, 1 plate with small marginal tear.- Nameplate of the Parisian bookbinder (Jean-Joseph) Tessier and of the architect Alexandre Dufour (architect of Louis XVIII; 1760-1835) on the flyleaf.- Original description in German: Architektur.- Piranesi, Francisco. Halbleder der Zeit (stärker beschabt u. bestoßen, Gelenke angeplatzt) mit Rückenschild „Antiquites Romaine Supplem(ent)“. Francesco Piranesi (um 1756-1810), italienischer Kupferstecher und Architekt, war der Sohn des berühmten Giovanni Battista Piranesi. Wie sein Vater schuf er Radierungen von den antiken Bau- und Kunstwerken der Stadt Rom. In den achtziger und neunziger Jahren erschienen zahlreiche Tafeln, oft gestützt auf unveröffentlichte Vorlagen seines Vaters. Als überzeugte Jacobiner mussten Francesco und sein Bruder Pietro 1799 nach Paris fliehen, dabei gelang es ihnen, sämtliche Druckplatten ihrer Werkstatt mitzunehmen. In Paris richteten sie nun eine neue Werkstatt ein, die „Calcographie des Piranesi frères“, hier wurde von 1800-1807 „eine sorgfältig gedruckte neue Ausgabe des gesamten graphischen Werks in siebenundzwanzig Bänden veranstaltet“ (Wilton/Ely, S. 132).- Vorliegend Band 6 der 27 Bände, der laut dem Katalog „Regia Calcografia di Roma“ aus den beiden Teilen der „Raccolta de“ Tempj Antichi“ von 1780 und 1790 besteht.- Die Tafeln teils datiert (zwischen 1780-90) und römisch nummeriert I-XIII, I-VIII, II-VI, X-XXIIII und XXVI-XXVIII, somit fehlen 5 Tafeln.- Im breiten weißen Außenrand teils etwas stockfleckig, 1 Tafel mit kleinem Randeinriss.- Namensschild des Pariser Buchbinders (Jean-Joseph) Tessier sowie des Architekten Alexandre Dufour (Architekt von Ludwig XVIII.; 1760-1835) auf Spiegel.
