Camille Pissarro Sold at Auction Prices

Figure painter, Painter, Landscape painter, Porträtmaler, Flower painter, Lithographer, b. 1830 - d. 1903

A key figure in the Impressionist movement, Camille Pissarro with his artwork was an important influence as he mentored both Cézanne and Gauguin. Through Camille Pissarro's drawings and creations in other media, he continued to be open to new forms of art throughout his career, embracing Seurat and Pointillism for a period. His steadfast mentoring of younger artists and his encouragement in going against the establishment is credited for the popularization of Camille Pissarro paintings and impressionist and modern art in general.

Born in St. Thomas, Virgin Islands, in 1830, Camille Pissarro studied artwork in Paris at the Swiss Academy, which offered no formal classes but provided painters freedom to develop their own ideas about art through study with peers. The turning point came with his collaboration with Cézanne, where their influences on each other led to a remarkable collection of impressionist paintings for sale.

FEMME ÉTENDANT DU LINGE, 1887 Öl auf Leinwand. 73,3 x 59,7 cm. Links unten monogrammiert. Beigegeben ein Zertifikat von Lionel Pissarro vom 6. März 2006, in Kopie. Literatur: Ausst.kat. Pioneering Modern Painting: Cézanne & Pissarro 1865 – 1885, by Joachim Pissarro, at The Museum of Modern Art, New York, June 26 - September 12, 2005, S. 64, Abb. 61. (13715311) (10) Camille Pissarro, 1830 Charlotte Amalie, Danish-West India – 1903 Paris FEMME ÉTENDANT DU LINGE, 1887 Oil on canvas. 73.3 x 59.7 cm. Monogrammed lower left. Accompanied by a certificate of authenticity by Lionel Pissarro dated 6 March 2006, in copy. Listed with Ventury under no. 716 and Wildenstein Institute under no. 853. Pissarro has chosen an unusual composition that takes some getting used to at first. The ground, walls and sky are laid horizontally on top of one another without creating any kind of obvious spatiality. A peasant woman is hanging up washing in front of a low balustrade, which is the only element creating a certain kind of perspective and three-dimensionality. This effect is, however, relativized by the uniform and alternatingly dense and less dense brushstrokes. The sky is the only area that is an exception with a flat misty structure and without any visible brushstrokes. The warm palette is dominated by hues of red and ochre and supported by scattered shades of green. This colour scheme is only broken up by the woman’s turquoise apron that directs the viewer’s gaze to the protagonist. The painter uses colour to construct space by breaking up colour fields through white sheets on the one hand and harmonizing it by treating all elements completely uniformly. Pissarro is a founding member of Impressionism. Although he was predestined to make his career in his father’s company on the Antilles, Pissarro went down a different path and moved to France aged 25 where he trained at the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris. He quickly became acquainted with Gustave Courbet (1819-1877), Charles-François Daubigny (1817-1878) and Baptiste Camille Corot (1796-1875) and perceived himself as their student for a long time. He was also in contact with Paul Cézanne (1839-1906) and Claude Monet (1840-1926). His frequent visits to Pontoise, the epicentre of the Impressionist movement brought him in close contact with fellow Impressionist colleagues. His acquaintance with Georges Seurat (1859-1891) in 1885, two years previous to the creation of the painting on offer in this lot, prompted him to try out the techniques of Pointillism. The present painting titled “Femme étendant du linge” bears witness to this. Pissarro does not break up the colour into small dots but uses livelier and at the same time warmer brushstrokes, giving this technique his own twist and pursuing his own style. Pissarro, two pages (written to the first and final sides of the bifolium), 8vo, Paris, 6th September 1891, to his wife ('Ma chere Julie'), in French. It is agreed that Mr. Gallimard should write to Geffroy, who is absent, to ask him to write a story that Lucien will illustrate with colour engravings and the like. It will be very artistic and will suit perfectly…..so it's one thing arranged…..he will therefore be able to make a book whose text will be engraved on wood and illustrated with colour engravings in water, which has never been done; I hope that this book will do Lucien great good. It's an exceptional chance to have found this business'). I took 5 paintings to Durand Ruel, I'm waiting for an answer, I don't know yet if he likes these paintings, he hasn't said a word'). I've been out of work for 15 days now, so I took the opportunity to draw a little and try to have some illustrations to do - I have to go and see if there's anything to do at the studio tonight. I didn't waste my time because I saw a lot of people and I hope to be able to have drawings in the newspapers or in books at some point, because that is the future for me'). Lucien also adds that they received the basket that she had sent, and that Georges is very happy with his wood, concluding in affectionate terms, 'Au revoir, ma chere mere, embrasse bien tous les enfants pour moi, je t'embrasse aussi, ton fils qui t'aime' (Translation: 'Goodbye, my dear mother, kiss all the children for me, I kiss you too, your son who loves you'). Following to the inside of the bifolium appears Camille Pissarro's A.L.S., C. Pissarro, two pages, 8vo, Paris, 18th February 1888, to his wife ('Ma chere Julie'), in French. Pissarro informs his wife that he is sending her three hundred francs and asks that she write to him as soon as possible to let him know that she has received it, also enquiring if he should give one hundred francs to Amelie and commenting 'J'ai encore une petite affaire et une autre plus importante en train, si cela reussit je pourrai encore donner quelque chose a l'une des deux qui n'aura rien recu. (Translation: 'I still have some small business and another more important in the pipeline, if that succeeds I could still give something to one of the two who will not have received anything. I have to buy Georges a pair of boots and an umbrella etc.'), also remarking that he hopes to return to Eragny soon to prepare some paintings. A few very light, minor creases and some light dust staining to the lower half of the third page, not affecting the text or signature, otherwise VG Julie Pissarro (1838-1926) Wife of Camille Pissarro from 1871, with whom she had seven children. Georges Henri Manzana Pissarro (1871-1961) French artist who worked in Impressionist and Post-Impressionist styles and was also a designer of textiles, decorative objects, furniture and glassware.
