Giovanni Battista Pittoni (Venice, 1687-1767) 'The Meeting between Alexander the Great and Roxana' Oil on canvas 31 x 54 cm. With a loose and fluid brushstroke characteristic of Rococo, in delicate tones full of light, this magnificent and elegant work by the Venetian Giovanni Battista Pittoni presents a scene from the life of Alexander the Great, depicting one of his romantic encounters. Giovanni Battista Pittoni (GBP) was one of the most distinguished Rococo painters of his time, known for his elegant compositions and vibrant colors. Although he produced various works on the life of Alexander the Great, The Meeting between Alexander the Great and Roxana stands out within his historical and mythological subjects, often focused on episodes of love and magnanimity associated with the conqueror. The painting represents the romantic encounter between Alexander the Great and Roxana, a Bactrian princess who became his wife. Pittoni captures this moment with a theatrical and romantic tone typical of 18th-century style. The work is inspired by ancient accounts describing Alexander the Great’s first entry into Babylon in 331 BC, following his victory over the Persian king Darius III. Alexander is welcomed with celebrations and hospitality, not as an invader but as a liberator. Roxana, known in Bactrian as Roshanak, meaning “little shining star,” was the wife of the conqueror. She was a Sogdian or Bactrian princess (from Central Asia) whom Alexander married after defeating Darius III, ruler of the Achaemenid Empire, and invading Persia. She was born before 347 BC, although the exact date remains uncertain, and was executed in 309 BC under the orders of Cassander. In this small-scale painting, Roxana appears completely surrendered and devoted to her future husband, accompanied by her retinue of servants and bearing gifts and dowry. She kneels before her beloved, who is portrayed on horseback, dressed in ceremonial attire atop his finest steed, and followed by his troops and generals. Behind her, a pair of Bactrian camels (Camelus bactrianus) stand out—large domestic ungulates native to the steppes of Central Asia, whose name derives from the ancient historical region of Bactria (a territory that today corresponds to parts of northern Afghanistan, southern Uzbekistan, and Tajikistan). Set against a clean, rocky background that is soft, idyllic, and imbued with a sense of romance, the painting is characterized by the use of light colors, a luminous atmosphere, stylized figures, and a fluid, elegant composition. This type of painting was often part of series commissioned by European monarchs to decorate palaces (such as those commissioned in 1736 by King Philip V of Spain for the New Gallery of the Royal Palace of La Granja de San Ildefonso), highlighting the life of the Macedonian leader as an example of virtue and power. Pittoni portrays this moment of triumph, acclaim, and gentle nuptials with great elegance and mastery. Provenance: Christie’s auction, New York. Sale of July 13, 1962, Lot 33.

VERKÜNDIGUNG DES HERRN Rötel auf Papier. 44 x 29,2 cm. Hinter Glas gerahmt.

(Venice 1687–1767) Allegory of Time, Truth and Power, oil on canvas, 40 x 56 cm, framed Provenance: with Galerie Canesso, Paris, 1999; Private collection, Switzerland We are grateful to Mauro Lucco for confirming the attribution of the present painting after examination in the original. This painting of an Allegory of Time, Truth and Power is possibly a preparatory model, or bozzetto, for a presently unidentified larger work, and presents a composition previously unknown in Giambattista Pittoni’s oeuvre. A group of three figures, an old man, a naked female and a reclining clothed female, are arranged around a putto lying on a cloud while in the background another putto is shown holding a dove. They form an enigmatic allegory, whose meaning is difficult to interpret. The winged old man undoubtedly represents Time, while the nude female may stand for Clarity or Truth. The reclining female holds a baton, or staff of command and a chain with medallions in her raised hand, possibly embodying the allegorical figure of Authority. It is known that the artist drew inspiration for such compositions from Cesare Ripa’s celebrated Iconologia, an iconographic reference employed by painters throughout Europe, however Pittoni reinterpreted this source with notable freedom, adapting it to his own purposes by simplifying the figures, merging them, or modifying their iconographic attributes (see F. Zava Boccazzi, Pittoni, Venice 1979, p. 174). This type of enigmatic allegory was very popular with collectors in the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries and is typical within Pittoni’s oeuvre. Indeed, several of the figures and motifs in the present painting recur elsewhere in Pittoni’s production. In a Mythological Allegory with Time (private collection), the winged old man and the putto holding a dove reappear (see A. Rizzi [ed.], I Maestri della pittura veneta del ’700, exhibition catalogue, Milan 1973, no. 53). Pittoni’s Allegory of Time and Beauty (Sotheby’s, New York, 29 May 2003, lot 108), has both the figure of Time and the naked nude female, similarly arranged around a putto, lying on a cloud facing away, holding a chain with a medallion in his hands. Finally, in Pittoni’s large ceiling painting of Justice and Peace with Minerva and Jupiter in the Ca’ Pesaro in Venice, Pittoni depicts Jupiter holding the staff of command in one hand, holding aloft a chain with medallions in the other. Giambattista Pittoni was a pivotal figure in eighteenth-century Venetian painting, whose refined Rococo style and elegant compositions earned him widespread acclaim across Europe. Initially trained by his uncle Francesco Pittoni, Giambattista quickly developed a distinctive aesthetic marked by graceful gestures, a luminous palette, and theatrical, yet harmonious, arrangements. His career flourished thanks to major commissions in Italy and abroad, including altarpieces for churches in Vienna, Cracow, and Diessen am Ammersee, and allegorical works for the Irish theatre impresario and art dealer, Owen McSwiny. As president of the Accademia di Belle Arti in Venice, the artist played a crucial role in shaping artistic education and taste. His legacy lies in his ability to synthesize Baroque dynamism with Rococo elegance, positioning him as a central figure in the diffusion of Venetian art across Europe.

    Est: €70,000 - €80,000

GIOVANNI BATTISTA PITTONI (Venice, 1687- 1767). "The encounter in Alexander the Great and Roxana". Oil on canvas. Provenance: Christie's New York, 1962. Measurements: 30 x 50 cm; 47 x 70 cm (frame). This scene represents a legendary historical episode: the moment in which Alexander the Great, Macedonian conqueror, meets Roxana, the Bactrian princess who would become his wife. The theme, very popular in European baroque and rococo, embodies the symbolic union of East and West, an encounter between military power and feminine grace that resonated with the ideas of cosmopolitanism and cultural reconciliation of enlightened Europe. In the composition, the artist places Alexander on horseback, flanked by his retinue, dressed in armor and red cloak that stands out amidst the sober palette. Roxana appears in an attitude of surrender, kneeling and turning her face towards the hero, in a gesture of modesty and nobility. Around her, a group of servants and companions complete the scene, bringing dynamism and diversity of attitudes. The landscape in the background, with its soft atmosphere and delicate chromatism, opens the scene towards a distant horizon, bringing respite to the density of the foreground. Aesthetically this work, attributed to Giovanni Battista Pittoni (Venice, 1687-1767), is an example of the narrative sensitivity and chromatic refinement characteristic of the 18th century Venetian master. Giovanni Battista Pittoni was one of the central figures of Venetian painting of the Settecento. Trained in the late Baroque environment, he developed a style that combined Baroque theatricality with Rococo grace and lightness. He was a member of the Accademia di Belle Arti di Venezia, of which he became president, and his prestige transcended the borders of Italy, receiving commissions from courts and collectors in Central Europe. His production is characterized by the use of luminous colors, balanced compositions and a particular sensitivity for historical and mythological scenes, which he endowed with emotion and narrative elegance. In this particular work, Pittoni achieves a delicate balance between the heroic and the intimate: Alexander does not appear as a ruthless conqueror, but as a gallant prince, while Roxana, far from being mere spoils of war, is shown as a central figure, dignified and resplendent. Thus, the painting not only narrates a historical episode, but transforms it into an allegory of love and the fusion of worlds, reaffirming the Enlightenment ideal of harmony between cultures.

SCHMERZENSMADONNA Hinterglasmalerei. 33,5 x 28 cm. 153; F. Zava Boccazzi, Pittoni. L’opera completa, Venezia 1979, p. 143 (citato) Traditionally attributed to Jacopo Amigoni in the collection of provenance, the present painting (lot 189) and the one in the following lot (lot 190) are exceptional pictorial works, already known in literature, by Giambattista Pittoni, very happy expressions of his exquisite Rococo taste which here, in the elegant bodies of Venus and Diana, combines the sweetest femininity with a refined eroticism, immortalising a timeless beauty. The works were published, with black and white illustrations, by Egidio Martini in 1964 in his famous volume dedicated to Venetian painting (E. Martini, La pittura veneziana del Settecento , Venice 1964, p. 78, p. 216 n. 166, plate 153 and fig. 149) and subsequently cited in the monograph by Zava Boccazzi (F. Zava Boccazzi, Pittoni , Venice 1979, p. 143). Unpublished at the time of Martini's publication, the scholar notes the paintings in a private Roman collection and places their execution around 1755, therefore close to the Annunciation of 1757 at the Gallerie dell'Accademia in Venice. Zava Boccazzi, who specifies that he knows the canvases only through Martini's photographs, compares them, due to their evident iconographic and compositional affinities, to the series of mythological subjects to which Pittoni devoted himself in the 1720s. The fulcrum of this repertoire is the Diana with the Nymphs from the Civic Museums of Vicenza (inv. A 97), to which are added Juno and Argus and Venus and Mars from a private collection (F. Zava Boccazzi, Pittoni , p. 143, no. 113 and 114, figs. 65-66), Diana and Endymion from the Hermitage in St. Petersburg (inv. GE-2451) and two other versions of Venus and Mars , one in London ( ibidem , no. 90, fig. 85) and one in the Louvre in Paris (inv. MNR 668). For the Diana and Venus, offered here at auction, which although undoubtedly present a taste very similar to this mythological series, the scholar suggests a more advanced dating due to the "thick and soft drapery", a stylistic feature of the mid-fourth decade ( ibidem , p. 143). The protagonists of the two compositions find effective comparisons not only in the mythological scenes just mentioned but also in other famous compositions by Pittoni. Consider, for example, the putti that animate the backgrounds of the numerous sacred works executed by the Venetian master and that, in terms of features and stylistic traits, recall the cupids of our paintings: in particular, the face of the cupid in Diana returns almost identically in the monumental altarpiece with Saint Jerome, Saint Peter of Alcantara and another saint in the National Gallery of Scotland in Edinburgh, here almost hidden in the background at the top left; the blindfolded cupid fluttering around Venus is a recurring motif in the artist's production, replicated several times with variations in pose, for example in the Hercules and Omphale in Palazzo Corsini in Rome and in the Bacchus and Ariadne in the Louvre. Also familiar within Pittoni's pictorial production is Diana's faithful little dog, which we find in the same pose both in the San Rocco in the Staatsgalerie in Stuttgart (ibidem , fig. 152) and in the Diana and Endymion in a private collection (ibidem , fig. 182) and, with some variations, in many other works. Considered lost by Zava Boccazzi in 1979, the Venus with cupids and the Sleeping Diana with cupid have re-emerged on the market today together with a third work depicting Apollo playing the lyre with two putti (lot 191), of equal executive quality and certainly belonging to the same series, but which finds no confirmation in the bibliography.

Gemäldegalerie in Berlin (Inv.-Nr. 1918). Öl/Lwd., doubl.; 28,5 cm x 23,5 cm. Rahmen. Beigefügt: Expertise von Prof. Dr. Robert Eigenberger, Wien, Mai 1971. Oil on canvas, relined. Giovanni Battista Pittoni (1687–1767) – attributed The Sacrifice of Isaac / Abraham Sacrificing His Son Isaac

    Est: €3,000 - €5,000

Pittoni is one of the main masters of Venetian history painting of the 18th century. His style combines pathos with graceful elegance and sophisticated colors. Abraham has just raised the knife to sacrifice his own son at God's command when the angel comes from above and grabs his arm and points to heaven: God doesn't want the human sacrifice, he just wanted to test the patriarch's faith . Abraham looks up in amazement and fright at the angel, who is floating on a cloud, leaning with his arm on Abraham's raised right arm and looking down at the patriarch. Isaac sits blindfolded, his hands tied behind his back, on the pyre heaped for the burnt offering. In the front right there is a cauldron with fire to fuel the burnt offering. On the left appears the ram that is to be sacrificed in place of Isaac. Abraham's blue robe and yellow cloak and the angel's pink drapery are the main accents. The triad of primary colors became popular in the High Baroque period. The suggested background landscape shows the stylistic features of the Venetian Rococo. The pyramidal, lively, moving composition is also typical of Venetian history painting and the 18th century. A related composition by Pittoni with the same subject is in the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston. Pittonie has addressed the topic several times. Oil on canvas, 54 × 37cm

Giovanni Battista Pittoni: Venus mit dem schlafenden Amor

    Est: €20,000 - €30,000

PITTONI, GIOVANNI BATTISTA Venice 1687 - 1767 Title: Venus mit dem schlafenden Amor. Technique: Oil on canvas. Mounting: Relined. Measurement: 95 x 75cm. Frame: Framed. Provenance: Private ownership, Austria. At first glance, this is a very classical antique subject: Venus and her son, the winged little Cupid, are reclining on a cloudy ground. A dove, attribute of the goddess of love, is also present. The background is a diffuse grey cloudy sky, blue in the upper left corner of the picture. The whole scene is compact and of a calm unity. There is no interaction, no scenic narrative. All the more reason to take a second look: Venus has taken an arrow from Cupid's quiver. She clearly holds it in front of her chest. According to mythology, Cupid, blinded by the blindfold, had two arrows in his quiver. One with a golden tip: whoever is hit by it will be inflamed with love. The second arrow has a lead tip. If Cupid shoots it, the victim will close himself off to earthly love. The disaster to which the use of both arrows can lead is known from the story of Apollo and Daphne. The arrow that Venus holds up here does not shine golden against the dark background. It is the one with the leaden tip. There is also only one dove in the picture and not, as usual, a pair of cooing doves. The left wing of the bird is bent. Thus it will no longer be able to fly to a mate. Renunciation of earthly love is the actual theme of the picture. Cupid, whose skin is coloured red by the glow of love, points with his two hands in different directions, allowing some interpretation here. The index finger of his right hand points upwards - to heaven? With his left hand he points out of the picture - towards the viewer? Is the leaden arrow meant to strike the viewer so that he turns not to earthly love but to heavenly love? Giovanni Battista Pittoni, who created this multi-layered painting, was one of Venice's most celebrated painters in the 18th century. He was trained by his uncle, the painter Francesco Pittoni, and at the age of 29 he became a master member of the Venetian painters' guild. Venice at the beginning of the 18th century was a gathering place of highly talented artists who influenced each other but also competed with each other. Thus Giovanni Battista Pittoni engaged with the art of the somewhat older Sebastiano Ricci as well as with his artist colleague Giovanni Battista Piazzetta, who was about the same age, and the somewhat younger Giovanni Battista Tiepolo. This fruitful competition shaped the Venetian Rococo. Giovanni Battista Pittoni quickly gained the greatest recognition with his historical, mythological and religious paintings, often in very large formats, and was immensely productive. He became an honorary member of the Accademia Clementina di Bologna and prior of the Collegio dei pittori di Venezia. He was also a founding member of the Accademia di belle arti di Venezia, and for a time its president. Unlike many Venetian artists, Pittoni probably travelled little; he produced many altarpieces for churches in Upper Italy and the Veneto. Nevertheless, he was one of the masters most in demand by foreign collectors and princely courts. Orders came from all over Europe and Pittoni painted the requested canvases in Venice, which were then sent to courtly and ecclesiastical patrons in Austria, Poland, Russia and "Germany". Today Giovanni Battista Pittoni is represented with paintings in many international museums and collections as one of the most outstanding representatives of the Venetian Baroque. We are grateful to Enrico Lucchese, Trieste, for confirming the attribution of the present painting on the basis of a high-resultion digital photograph. Giovanni Battista Pittoni (1687–1767), St. Joseph with the Baby Jesus

    Est: €5,000 - €7,000

Pittoni is a major representative of the Venetian Rococo and painted altarpieces and paintings with mythological and historical subjects. He was a founding member of the Accademia di Belle Arte de Venezia, and later its president. In 1727 he was appointed director of the Accademia Clementina, in Bologna. The painting shows St. Joseph from the side, seated in front of a pair of pillars, while the infant Jesus is on his knees, facing the viewer. Joseph holds a large white lily in his hand. A putto, lower right, brandishes a censer. A second putto rests on the floor and leaves through a large book. The robe colors move tones around the primary colors red, yellow and blue. The brilliantly composed scene makes a festive, radiant impression. It is a bozzetto for an altarpiece. Dario Succi attributed the painting to Giovanni Battista Pittoni and dates it to the first half of the 1750s. Report by Dario Succi.

DER HEILIGE JOSEF MIT DEM JESUSKNABEN Öl auf Leinwand. 79 x 59 cm. In vergoldetem Rahmen. (13017521) (18)

DIANA MIT DEN NYMPHEN UND AKTAION Öl auf Leinwand. Doubliert. 128 x 181 cm. In vergoldetem Rahmen. (1301731) (13) Giovanni Battista Pittoni the Younger, 1687 Venice – 1767 IBID. Giovanni Battista Pittoni (1687–1767), St. Joseph with the Baby Jesus

    Est: €8,000 - €10,000

  • Giovanni Battista Pittoni the Elder (1687 Venice – 1767), Saint Joseph with the Baby Jesus
    Nov. 27, 2021

Giovanni Battista Pittoni the Elder (1687 Venice – 1767), Saint Joseph with the Baby Jesus

    Est: €3,000 - €5,000

Pittoni received his lessons first from his uncle Francesco Pittoni (active around 1687-around 1718), later from Antonio Balestra (1666-1740), but was also taught by Sebastiano Ricci (1659-1734), Giovanni Battista Piazzetta (1682-1754) and Giovanni Battista Tiepolo (1696-1770), whom he eventually replaced as President of the Venetian Academy. Pittoni is one of the most sought-after painters and draftsmen of the late baroque and rococo periods. The two figures are shown moving to the left. Joseph in the three-quarter portrait, with his bearded head turned down to the left, holds the baby Jesus in the crook of his left arm, who is also looking in the same direction. The right hand of Joseph bears the attribute of a lily stem. The lighting of the group from the bottom left also indicates that this is a preliminary study for a multi-figure overall representation, with a center that can be assumed to be at the bottom left.
