      ADA MAY PLANTE (1875-1950) Portrait of Mr. Malcolm Pratt oil on canvas laid on board signed lower left: A.M.Plante 56 x 45.5cm PROVENANCE: Deutscher~Menzies, Melbourne, 4 June 2003, lot 309 Private collection, Sydney EXHIBITIONS: The Melbourne Modernists, Victorian Artists Society, Melbourne, 15-28 October 1990, cat. no. 35 LITERATURE: In the 1930s, Malcolm Pratt was a tenant, along with Ada Plante, Lina Bryans and William Frater, of Darebin Bridge House in Melbourne. In 1942 Bryans bought the building and shortly after Ian Fairweather joined the residents, living and working there. Malcolm Pratt was a close friend of Ada's, who painted Malcolm at least twice including this portrait likely from the late 1930s or early 40s. Malcolm was thought to be a free thinker in support of the avant garde artistic circles prevalent, although marginal, at the time.

      § ADA MAY PLANTE (1875-1950) Red House Darebin c.1935 oil on canvas on board signed lower right: A M Plante 65 x 58cm PROVENANCE: Acquired directly from the artist Private collection, Perth GFL Fine Art, Perth, 30 November 2010, lot 19 Private collection, Melbourne OTHER NOTES: Plante moved to Darebin Bridge House, Ivanhoe in 1935 with two other female artists, and William Frater, the man who introduced her to the paintings of Cézanne, Van Gogh and Post-Impressionism, often painted there. Ada was shy and intensely private, and although she exhibited extensively throughout her life, attracting recognition as a student and young artist, her work remained relatively unknown.
