Condition A / A-: minor repaired tears at edges, light abrasions in image. John Platt was one of the foremost British color woodblock printers of his generation. "The colour prints he produced are astonishing in their vibrancy and quality and were described by one critic at the time as 'a gamut of singing hues'" (http://www.woodblock.com/platt/introduction.html). This modern Art Deco or even Cubist-inspired image is an exciting departure from his printed work, which is more academic and classical in style. This is the artist's only known poster.

JOHN EDGAR PLATT (British 1886 -1967) Esther, The original Arts and Crafts design for a stained glass window-possibly for William Morris & Company for All Saints Church, Leek, Staffordshire-a grade 1 listed building reflecting the Arts & Crafts Movement. Watercolour, signed 157.5cm x 49cm (62 x 19 inches) Note : John Platt won a scholarship to study at the Royal College of Art, 1905-08, and went on to become Principal of both Leicester College of Art and Blackheath School of Art. He won a gold medal at the International Print Makers' Exhibition, 1922. During his time at Royal College of Art he was widely lauded and won prizes across the art spectrum. Platt was a student during the height of the Arts and Crafts in 1905, and so was well schooled in the Art Nouveau. Between 1920 and 1923, Platt was Head of Department of Applied Art at the Edinburgh College of Art. He exhibited at the RA, NEAC, RE and with the British Council. During World War II he was an Official War Artist. His work is held by the British Museum, Imperial War Museum, Victoria and Albert Museum and the Tate. He wrote for a number of publications including The Studio and The Artist.
