He came to Britain after the Second World War, in which he had played an active role as a partisan in the Italian resistance. He continued working in London in a classical figurative tradition, inspired by great sculptors of the past such as Michelangelo and Rodin. His work was popular in the 1960s and 70s, until his untimely death in 1981. He was interested in mythological and religious themes as well as capturing figures in movement. The present work represents a myth from Greek and Roman mythology in which the Spartan Queen Leda was seduced by Jupiter, king of the Gods, disguised as a swan. We are grateful to Carol Plazzotta for her assistance in cataloguing this lot. Notes: A masterful study in tension, grace, and mythological drama, The Swan (Life-Size) exemplifies Enzo Plazzotta’s lifelong fascination with the poetry of the human body in motion. Born in Italy, Plazzotta trained at the prestigious Accademia di Brera in Milan under the tutelage of prominent sculptors Giacomo Manzù and Francesco Messina. Following the Second World War, during which he served courageously as a partisan in the Italian resistance, Plazzotta relocated to Britain. Settling in London, he dedicated himself to a classical figurative tradition, drawing deep inspiration from the expressive power of historical masters such as Michelangelo and Auguste Rodin. He enjoyed profound popularity throughout the 1960s and 1970s until his untimely death in 1981, celebrated particularly for his ability to translate fleeting physical movement into solid bronze. The Swan tackles one of the most enduring subjects of Greco-Roman mythology: the seduction of the Spartan Queen Leda by Jupiter, King of the Gods, disguised as a magnificent swan. Plazzotta’s interpretation is remarkably dynamic. Leda is captured in a moment of rapturous surrender, balanced delicately en pointe with her back dramatically arched and her head thrown back. The heavy, textured wings of the swan envelop her, creating a striking visual contrast between the smooth, sensuous curves of the female nude and the rugged, powerful plumage of the bird. Coming directly from the artist’s estate in 2001, this rare artist’s copy boasts impeccable provenance. It stands not only as a testament to Plazzotta’s exceptional technical skill, cast beautifully by the renowned Mariani Foundry, but also as a breathtaking focal point for any collection of modern figurative sculpture.

(…) Her early figures and birds, horses and riders, are like caged wild creatures, or cramped contortionist, trying to get out’ - Annette Ratuszniak, Elisabeth Frink Catalogue Raisonne of Sculpture 1947-95, p.22 Born in Suffolk in 1930, Dame Elisabeth Frink’s artwork displays great style and skill, and leans heavily on her experiences as an artist growing up in Britian during the austerity of the inter-war and post-war years. She was intensely influenced by the effects of war. As a young child, hearing some bomber planes returning to a nearby airfield, she was forced to dive into a nearby bush and take cover to avoid the incoming fire of German fighter plane. Frink studied under Willi Soukop at Guildford School of Art before moving to Chelsea School of Art in 1949. After this she became a key competent of the influential Geometry of Fear group which included important post-war artists Bernard Meadows, Reg Butler, Kenneth Armitage, Robert Adams, Lynn Chadwick, Geoffrey Clarke, William Turnbull and Eduardo Paolozzi. Her work had many influences, but the conflict, masculinity and the human and animal form, were as strong as any. Another important motif and subject she would revisit on many occasions was the horse and often in interaction with the rider. In the earliest examples of her work, even those that preceded her attendance at the Chelsea School of Art in 1949, her visions were far from optimistic. Her earliest drawings accomplished during the 50s depicted bleak and dystopian realities, bird-like figures, crucifixions, horses and warriors. These themes permeated much of her work, including notably her sculptures whereby she revisited many motifs, the horse and rider, the depiction of birds and the human form, among many other themes. The work is undoubtably sculptural in its rendering both the head of the figure and horse are constructed with a three-dimensionality as monochromatic materials of pen & ink and grey wash sculpt the sheet. The relationship between the figure and the horse is intrinsically linked as we witness a connection between the two. This is something repeated in the artist’s work, and there are countless examples of the relationship between horses and figures, from other early drawings such as Horses and Warriors (1950) to much later sculptural examples of the horse and rider in many different forms. Frink remarked in 1992 that, ‘The horse has done so much for man (…) carries him into battle’, referencing the relationship between the two beings and further commenting on the fragility of this bond, stating everything can transform in just one action – the horse ‘chucking him off’ their back. These relationships are carefully explored and the deep connection between man and nature is not only present in this work but reflected in many such examples, not only with horses but also that of birds. It is evident that Frink’s experience as a child, living very close to a local airbase where she witnessed scenes of fighter-war planes from such a young age had an immense impact on her work. These experiences informed much of the imagery that she used throughout her career and this trauma was reflected in her depictions of both man and nature, both individually and together.
