HENRI HONORÉ PLÉ 1853 Paris - 1922 Paris 'FRANCIS I OF FRANCE ON HORSEBACK' Bronze with gold patina, on an oval plinth. H. 30, W. 28, D. 12 cm; weight approx. 4.24 kg. Unsigned; comparable version by Henri Honoré Plé. Fully modeled depiction of a nobleman on horseback, dressed in Renaissance-style historical costume. The rider wears elaborately detailed attire and headgear; the horse is depicted in a leaping pose. In comparable examples, this historical equestrian figure of a magnificently dressed nobleman is sometimes identified as Francis I of France or Henry VIII. Bibliography: Philippe Dahhan, "Etains 1900 - 200 Sculpteurs de la Belle Epoque", Editions de l'amateur. Page 345, fig. 1051. Weight: 9,700 g. Measurements: 37 x 39 x 22 cm. This large-format baluster-shaped piece is a display of classical and naturalistic symbolism. In the upper part, there is a semicircular decoration with the figure of a young woman lying next to a grotesque mask, while the handle is transformed into a swan emerging from a rosette of leaves, alluding to the myth of Leda. The base narrates a costumbrist scene of a child observing a crab, all framed in a body decorated with a seascape of sailboats in relief. The piece bears the author's signature and the prestigious stamp of the Ettlinger Frères foundry. Henri Honoré Plé trained with the renowned artists Gérault and Mathurin Moreau. He developed his career as a painter and sculptor, specializing in portraits and bas-reliefs, mainly in stone. He exhibited regularly at the Paris Salon from 1877, where he received honorable mentions in 1879, and was awarded a bronze medal at the 1900 Paris Universal Exposition. Ettlinger Frères, foundry and publisher, was an early 20th century foundry specializing in the production of pewter objects, especially linked to the Art Nouveau style. The house was associated with works by artists such as François Madurell and Joseph Berthier.

An antique 19th century French gilt bronze statue Demeter and Persephone or The Allegory of Summer by Henry Honore Ple, French, 1853 to 1922. Very detailed casting. Signed on the base. Henri Honore Ple was a painter and sculptor, who trained under the celebrated French sculptor Mathurin Moreau. He exhibited for the first time at the Paris Salon in 1877 and received an honorable mention in 1879. His works were also exhibited at the World Exhibition in Paris in 1900, where he received a bronze medal. Ple was a painter of portraits as well as a sculptor. Many of Ples works depict Oriental subject matter and he is particularly noted for his works in bronze and patinated bronze. Later in the 19th Century and in the early 20th Century Ple began to produce works in the popular Art Nouveau style.
