François Pompon (1855-1933), Mouseion, ijsbeer beeld;Uitgevoerd in wit polyresin. Met aankoopbewijs van Singer Shop Laren en een certificaat. h. 16,5 cm, l. 31 cm. Pompon heeft het grootste deel van zijn leven gewerkt in dienst van andere kunstenaars. Van 1890 tot 1895 was hij chef d’atelier van Rodin, en daarna assisteerde hij tot 1916 René de Saint-Mareaux. Daarnaast bleef hij zoeken naar een eigen stijl, waarbij het opkomende Japonisme en zijn bewondering voor de Egyptische kunst een grote rol speelden. Pas op zijn 67-ste volgde zijn grote doorbraak bij de tentoonstelling van zijn beroemde ijsbeer. [1]

Patinated Bronze sculpture. Signed "F. Pompon" and titled "Cosette". This unique work by François Pompon is marked by the academicism that characterized the sculptor's early period. Presented at the Salon des Artistes in 1890 (no. 4366), it did not receive the official recognition the sculptor sought. However, the realism, the expression of suffering, toil, and poverty in Cosset, the young girl from Victor Hugo's novel Les Miserables, caught the attention of the sculptor Auguste Rodin, who would become his mentor. Pompon worked for Rodin for years, eventually becoming director of his workshop in 1893. Unable to secure the official support that would have provided him with stability and materials, Pompon arranged with the sculptor Leon Persinka and the foundryman Edmond Siot to produce Cosset in four different sizes (1888-1892). It was at this time that Persinka must have acquired the work presented here, unique in this size, which he likely sold around 1900. The plaster cast that served as the model for this sculpture is preserved in the Victor Hugo Museum, donated by the artist himself. Until now, it was believed that the Bronze cast presented here had been destroyed. Attached is a certificate and study by Ms. Liliane Colas dated March 2025. TOURTERELLE Höhe: 23,9 cm. Seitlich signiert „POMPON“. Rückseitig Gießerstempel Valsuani. Nach dem 1919 von Pompon entworfenen Modell „Tourterelle“. Pompons Stil zeichnet sich durch die starke Reduktion der Körperformen – vornehmlich Tierfiguren – aus. Weiche, harmonische Übergänge waren ihm dabei wichtig und er verzichtete auf jegliche Ausformung von starken Kanten. Pompon studierte an der École des Beaux-Arts und wurde von Bildhauern wie Pierre-Louis Rouillard (1820–1881) und René de Saint-Marceaux (1845–1915) beeinflusst. Nach der Entwicklung seines eigenen Stils leitete er drei Jahre lang die Werkstatt Auguste Renoirs. Seinen künstlerischen Durchbruch erzielte er mit seinem berühmten Eisbären, den er im Art déco-Stil schuf. Exemplare befinden sich unter anderem im Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, und im Musée d'Orsay, Paris. Literatur: Vgl. MONUMENTAL ET EXCEPTIONNEL BRONZE "LE GRAND CERF" de François POMPON (1855-1933) Sculpture en bronze à patine noire signée sur la terrasse "Pompon" et numérotée "2/25" sur la tranche arrière. Fonte posthume. Bronze réalisé en surmoulage 3D par la fonderie "Famart". Cachet "reproduction". Cette pièce a été éditée en deux exemplaires uniquement, car la fonderie est maintenant fermée, il s'agit ici du n° 2. Dim : 162 x 112 x 68 cm env. État d'usage et d'entretien Entré à l'atelier d'Auguste Rodin dès 1890 où il rencontre Camille Claudel, François Pompon se spécialise dans la représentation du monde animal, notamment en l'étudiant de près au Jardin des Plantes. À partir de 1905, il développe un style propre par la simplification des formes et des volumes de ses sculptures dont le polissage ouvre la porte à une nouvelle modernité, tranchant avec le réalisme académique du XIXe. Le style lisse de ses œuvres lui apporte une renommée internationale confirmée par des expositions au Japon, aux États-Unis, au Brésil, en Suède... Le "Grand Cerf" est une des trois sculptures monumentales de Pompon, avec l’Ours Blanc et le Taureau. C'est justement l'ours blanc, en 1922, qui lui apporte la consécration lui accordant définitivement la reconnaissance du public. 7 ans plus tard, il présente le "Grand Cerf" au Salon d’Automne de 1929. Le succès de cette œuvre majeure est telle que plusieurs fontes au sable sont éditées chez Andro en grand et petit format. Arhem fera d’ailleurs en 1952 l’acquisition d’un grand exemplaire en bronze qui se dresse aujourd’hui sur l’une des places de cette cité néerlandaise. La silhouette majestueuse de l’animal exprime toute la puissance et l'élégance de ces cervidés rappelant encore au sculpteur les forêts de son Morvan natal.

Alors qu’il n’est encore que praticien pour des grands noms de la Sculpture moderne tel qu’Alexandre Falguière, Camille Claudel, Auguste Rodin ou encore René de Saint Marceaux, François Pompon se plait à créer dès les années 1880, puis plus intensément à partir de 1902, des sujets animaliers d’une grande épure. Remarqué par l’éditeur Adrien Hébrard, une première exposition est dédiée en 1919 à ses séries d’animaux domestiques. En 1922, sur les encouragements de ses amis Antoine Bourdelle et René Demeurisse, Pompon participe pour la première fois au Salon d’Automne et y présente un modèle en plâtre de grand format d’un ours blanc, sujet qui l’occupe depuis 1918. Face au succès considérable que connait le modèle au Salon, l’artiste le reprend plusieurs fois entre 1922 et 1927. Il en donne plusieurs versions avec de légères variantes (notamment la position des pattes) et dans diverses dimensions en marbre, en biscuits et en bronze. Cette épreuve en biscuit naturel de l’Ours blanc de François Pompon correspond à la version « C », celle où les pattes droites ne se touchent pas, répertoriée dans le catalogue publié par Anne Pingeot en 1994.

Patinated bronze sculpture. Signed "F. Pompon" and titled "Cosette". This unique work by François Pompon is marked by the academicism that characterized the sculptor's early period. Presented at the Salon of Artists in 1890 (no. 4366), it did not receive the official recognition that the sculptor sought. However, the realism and expression of suffering, effort, and poverty in Cosset, the girl in Victor Hugo's novel Les Miserables, caught the attention of the sculptor Auguste Rodin, who would later become his mentor. Pompon worked for him for years, eventually becoming director of his workshop in 1893. Unable to secure the official support that would have provided him with stability and materials, Pompon agreed with the sculptor Leon Persinka and the founder Edmond Siot to produce Cosset in four different sizes (1888–1892). It was at this time that Persinka must have acquired the work presented here, the only one in this size, and which he must have sold around 1900. The plaster cast that served as a model for this sculpture is preserved in the Victor Hugo Museum, donated by the artist himself. It is believed, to this day, that the bronze presented here had been destroyed. Attached is a certificate and study by Mrs. Liliane Colas dated March 2025. Provenance: -Persinka, Paris, 1890 -Acquired around 1900/07 by the Marquises of Pobla de Claramunt -By descent to the current owners. This bronze will be included in the new catalogue being prepared by the specialist Mrs. Liliane Colas, scheduled for 2025, with the number F14. Measurements: 128 x 41 x 60 cm.
