Description EN An oriental beauty. Oil on panel (mahogany). Signed ''Portielje Anvers''. Red lacquer seal on verso. It is suggested that Jan Portielje made trips to the Middle East in order to then paint his bust portraits of oriental women. No indication was found in the surviving sketchbooks that he actually undertook those trips. Jan Portielje's works found wide distribution in his homeland of Belgium and motherland the Netherlands, but also through the art trade in Antwerp he sold a lot of work in America where exotic and oriental subjects attracted great interest. Decked out in exotic attire and encircled with jewels, the semi-feminine portraits and knee-length pieces lived up to expectations and it was of secondary importance whether there was a Spanish, Moroccan, Algerian, Egyptian, Turkish, Palestinian, Syrian, Greek, Albanian, Bohemian label under the painting. Therefore, the models Jan Portielje chose for his oriental women were not from those areas, but were presumably from Antwerp and were dressed in the artist's studio where the attributes were plentiful. It will also have mattered little or nothing to the buyers of the time whether the women depicted were actually from the areas suggested by the title on the frame or inscription mentioned in a document. Therefore, the woman must be interpreted as a type rather than a concrete portrait and illustrates the male imagination of exotic sensuality. Description FR Une beauté orientale. Il est suggéré que Jan Portielje a fait des voyages au Moyen-Orient pour peindre ensuite ses portraits en buste de femmes orientales. Aucune indication n'a été trouvée dans les carnets d'esquisses qui ont été conservés quant au fait qu'il ait réellement entrepris ces voyages. Les œuvres de Jan Portielje ont été largement diffusées dans son pays d'origine, la Belgique, et dans sa mère patrie, les Pays-Bas, mais il a également vendu beaucoup d'œuvres dans le cadre du commerce de l'art à Anvers, en Amérique, où les sujets exotiques et orientaux suscitaient un grand intérêt. Parés de vêtements exotiques et entourés de bijoux, les portraits semi-féminins et les pièces aux genoux répondaient aux attentes et il importait peu qu'une étiquette espagnole, marocaine, algérienne, égyptienne, turque, palestinienne, syrienne, grecque, albanaise ou bohémienne soit apposée sur le tableau. Par conséquent, les modèles utilisés par Jan Portielje pour ses femmes orientales ne provenaient pas de ces régions, mais vraisemblablement d'Anvers et étaient habillés dans l'atelier de l'artiste où les attributs étaient nombreux. De même, il importait peu ou pas du tout aux acheteurs de l'époque que les femmes représentées soient effectivement originaires des régions suggérées par le titre figurant sur le cadre ou l'inscription mentionnée dans un document. La femme doit donc être interprétée comme un type plutôt que comme un portrait concret, illustrant l'imaginaire masculin de la sensualité exotique. Beschrijving NL Een oriëntaalse schoonheid. Er wordt gesuggereerd dat Jan Portielje reizen naar het Midden-Oosten heeft gemaakt om vervolgens zijn busteportretten van oriëntaalse vrouwen te schilderen. In de bewaard gebleven schetsboeken werd geen enkele aanwijzing gevonden dat hij die reizen daadwerkelijk heeft ondernomen. De werken van Jan Portielje vonden veel aftrek in zijn thuisland België en moederland Nederland, maar ook via de kunsthandel in Antwerpen verkocht hij veel werk in Amerika waar voor exotische en oriëntaalse onderwerpen grote belangstelling was. Uitgedost in exotische kledij en omhangen met juwelen voldeden de halflijfse portretten en kniestukken aan de verwachtingen en was het van ondergeschikt belang of er een Spaans, Marokkaans, Algerijns, Egyptisch, Turks, Palestijns, Syrisch, Grieks, Albanees, Boheems etiket onder het schilderij stond. De modellen die Jan Portielje voor zijn oriëntaalse vrouwen koos, kwamen dan ook niet uit die gebieden, maar waren vermoedelijk uit Antwerpen afkomstig en werden gekleed in het atelier van de kunstenaar waar de attributen ruimschoots aanwezig waren. Voor de toenmalige kopers zal het ook weinig of niets hebben uitgemaakt of de afgebeelde vrouwen daadwerkelijk uit de gebieden afkomstig waren die door de titel op de lijst of in een document vermeld opschrift gesuggereerd werden. De vrouw moet dan ook eerder als een type dan als een concreet portret worden geïnterpreteerd en illustreert de mannelijke verbeelding van de exotische sensualiteit.

He was particularly celebrated for his genre scenes and portraits, often depicting women. He had a major showing at the Exposition Internationale d'Anvers (1894), and was a regular participant in the Exhibition of Living Masters in the Netherlands from 1848 to 1888. Outside of Belgium and the Netherlands, his works may be seen at the Alfred East Art Gallery in Kettering, and the Bendigo Art Gallery in Victoria. In Shakespeare's drama Hamlet (1599–1601), Ophelia is a young noblewoman of Denmark, the daughter of Polonius, sister of Laertes, and potential wife of Prince Hamlet. Along with Queen Gertrude, she is one of only two female characters in the original play.
