        • Impressionist Landscape by Edward Potthast
          Oct. 18, 2023

          Impressionist Landscape by Edward Potthast

          Est: $5,000 - $8,000

Edward Henry Potthast (American/Cincinnati, 1857-1927). Oil on canvas, signed l.r., and with exhibition label to verso. An large example of the Cincinnati native's landscape painting, with a figure and cattle at the shore of a river. Potthast was regarded as a seminal American Impressionist, especially with his depictions of Coney Island, and leisurely beach subjects that were indicative of turn-of-the-century recreational activity during the Industrial Age. 23.25" x 29.75" (sight), 34.5" x 40.5" (framed). Conservation report from 1983 included. Provenance: Descended through the family of Richard Knight LeBlond, founder of the R. K. LeBlond Machine Tool Company in Cincinnati, Ohio, a manufacturer metal cutting lathes. The Madison and Edwards Road plant of The R.K. Le Blond Machine Tool Company (in service 1918-1989) is an example of the early 20th century "factory beautiful" movement in American industry. At this location a prominent Cincinnati area manufacturer of machine tools established itself as the industry's foremost producer of lathes, and through mid-century dominated the world market for specialized lathes for the machining of engine crankshafts and for gun boring. The impact of this manufacturing plant on 20th century culture has been significant both during peacetime (when virtually all moving vehicles from American Autmobiles to Soviet tractors were powered by engines with crankshafts made on Le Blond lathes) and during wartime when opponents in two world wars fired upon each other using ordinance of every size that had been bored and rifled on Le Blond equipment). Locally, the plant had significance as a major industrial employer during an era that spanned the Great Depression. (Library of Congress)

Provenance: Adams Davidson Galleries, Washington, D.C.; private collection, Potomac, Maryland; sold Quinn's Auction Galleries, Falls Church, Virginia, January 30, 2021, lot 295, to current owner, private collection, Toronto.Exhibited: "Works on Paper: From Thomas Cole to Andrew Wyeth," Adams Davidson Galleries, Washington, D.C., April 19- June 3, 1980, number 39, with the label. Edward H. Potthast studied intermittently at the McMicken School of Design between 1869 and 1887. He also worked as a lithography apprentice before traveling to Munich and Paris. When he returned to America he settled in NYC and worked as an illustrator for "Harper's" and "Scribner's". In the 1890s, Potthast became serious about painting the figure. He was also inspired by several trips out West that allowed him the opportunity to paint landscapes with Tonalist qualities in his night scenes. His best known works, however, are Impressionistic beach scenes of women and children playing in the surf. His bold brushwork describes the rocky New England coastline very accurately.
