Edward Povey O/C "A Classical Couple Embracing"

        Est: $1,000 - $1,600

Edward Povey O/C (1951-) "A Classical Couple Embracing". English. Dated 1999 Although having endless art accolades we chose to describe the artist from the perspective of Professor Eric Sunderland the person who commissioned him to paint the schools room size mural at University of wales at bangor in 1992. This is what he wrote: Edward Povey. As Vice-Chancellor of the University of Wales at Bangor in 1992, I commissioned Edward Povey to paint the Hall of Illusion mural. Since those first meetings with him I have been impressed by his total dedication to por- traying his concepts and views of the world about him, particularly in immensely compelling monumental human figures. A great deal of our conscious awareness of living involves interaction with other human beings - their loves, hopes, desires, inadequacies, sadness and joy and in exploring these and other aspects of human experience, Edward Povey strikes a resonating chord in all of us. His figures are ourselves, our families, friends, neighbours and public figures interpreted in some instances at least in ways different from our own, but nonetheless evocative, thoughtful and profound. Monumental they may be, but again they are sensitive to variations in mood and emotive state and his powers of depiction in a remarkable manner transcend the limitations of space, dimension, colour and tone inherent in all works of art. His output is of course influenced by that of other great artists and by his own life experiences, but has a distinctiveness and a powerful quality which renders it unique. As his experiences in life diversify and his skill as an artist continues to develop, I am sure that even more insightful works will be produced and they will be anticipated with great interest. Donna Tolar (B. 1966) English, O/C

        Est: $800 - $1,200

Donna Schulz Tolar (B. 1966) English, Oil on Canvas. Portrait of a boy. Signed in the lower left. Overall Size: 37 x 32 in. Sight Size: 27 x 21 1/2 in. Frame Thickness: 2 1/4 in. #4756 . Donna Schulz Tolar (Born 1966) is active/lives in Texas. Donna Tolar is known for Nude painting. Words fail when trying to describe the magical and mystical world of Sub Rosa, the home of internationally renowned artist Edward Povey and his artist wife, Donna Tolar. Perhaps if you said fanciful, original, imaginative, inspired, inventive, ingenious, dazzling, delightful. You might, just might, be able to capture the essence of what lies at the heart of this enchanting home. But Sub Rosa is more than this. The rose colored walls of this adobe structure hidden in the fringe of the Texas Hills are imbued with the souls of both their owners. Sub Rosa is Edward Povey and Donna Tolar. All three unique. Unafraid to say, "...this is who I am. This is what I love. Come share the joy!" One’s head spins; beware of sensory overload. Entering the secret world under the rose is not a knock on an ordinary door, but a journey that twists and turns through a stepped up passage that leads to what most people feel is the heart of every home. But this is no ordinary space. Quietly lit, inspired by a country kitchen in France, it is an entirely open concept and cabinet doors do not exist. Countertops are comprised of pieces of furniture. A contemporary refrigerator has the look of ages. Windows on one wall are reminiscent of a country church. The pressed tin ceiling, designed by the owners, was laboriously hand finished to resemble old copper. The expected dining room table has been replaced with a lounge area. "Because everyone seemed to gather in the kitchen and didn’t want to leave, we switched the furniture," explains Donna Tolar. Above an antique door leading through "Alice’s Rabbit Hole" to the new dining area, is a shrine filled with small photos, "...in honor of those whom we have loved and lost," says Edward. And because this couple savors each moment in life, they also have an unexpected whimsical way of preserving recent memories. Towering candelabra laden with the melted wax of candles piled on top of candles hold the laughter and joy of long evenings spent with cherished friends. Any individual could spend a week of delighted discovery in this now multi-purpose room (an impressive four poster guest bed is tucked behind a large screen in the corner) and still discover something new when they return, a day, a week, a month later, for Sub Rosa seem sa living thing that continually evolves.
