Musterschnitte, 1989, p. 238 (form) Gegen Ende des ersten Weltkriegs arbeitete der Wiener Glasverleger J. & L. Lobmeyr intensiv mit der Glasfabrik Lötz zusammen. Beauftragt und ausgeführt wurden vor allem Vasen nach Entwürfen Michael Powolnys, der damals stark von den technischen Leistungen venezianischer Glasmacher beeindruckt war. Auch unsere Vase, die Lobmeyr in drei verschiedenen Größen und unterschiedlichen Glasfarben ausführen ließ, mutet an, als wäre sie in Murano entstanden – und nicht in einer böhmischen Glashütte. Handwerklich ist das Stück durch seine zehn aus der heißen Glasmasse herausmodellierten kleinen Henkel ein Meisterwerk. (EP) for J. & L. Monografie und Werkverzeichnis, Vienna/Cologne 1990, WV-no. 156 Dass Michael Powolny Putten in allen möglichen Situationen, Farbgebungen und in Kombination mit anderen Lebewesen modelliert hat, ist allgemein bekannt. Aber dass er solche Putten zu einem seriellen Flächendekor zusammengestellt hat, ist äußerst selten und kaum bekannt: Bei unserer wohl für eine Ausstellung bestimmten, um Jahr 1913 entstandenen Säule trifft genau dies zu: Powolny hat ein Relief aus unzähligen, gleich großen in gleicher Haltung über- und nebeneinander stehenden kleinen Buben geschaffen, das in der Art einer Tapete beliebig verbreitert und verlängert werden kann. Auf diese Weise konnten Untersätze, für Ausstellungen bestimmte Säulen und dergleichen in beliebigen Formen und Größen produziert werden. Unsere Säule hat ursprünglich in einer Ausstellung als gut belastbarer und zu diesem Zweck mit mehreren Rippen verstärkter Sockel für eine – wohl auch von Powolny geschaffene – Skulptur gedient. Danach ist sie in dem privaten Haushalt der Familie Schleiss übernommen worden, wo sie mehr als 110 Jahre – gleichfalls – als Sockel gedient hat. (EP)
