    Attributed to MICHAEL POWOLNY (Austria, 1871 -1954) for LOETZ. Blown glass, bent glass and opaline. Measurements: 18 x 13,5 x 13,5 cm. Michael Powolny was an Austrian sculptor, medalist, ceramist, designer and teacher. Powolny was born in Judenburg. He trained at the Tonindustrie in Znaim and, from 1894 to 1901, at the Wiener Kunstgewerbeschule. In 1906 he founded, together with Bertold Löffler, the Wiener Keramik workshop, which a year later became part of the Wiener Werkstätte. Powolny made several designs for the Austrian manufacture Loetz, founded in 1840 and a pioneer in the use of innovative techniques and materials, following the line of experimentation of the glass artists of the second half of the nineteenth century. The firm participated in the International Exhibition in Paris in 1889, where his pieces were unanimously acclaimed by critics.

    An assembled set of four putti ceramic sculptures including a putto with cornucopia (Summer), a putto with flowers (Spring), a putto with grapes (Autumn), and a putto holding a wreath (Winter), made in Vienna with Wiener Keramik mark on each base h. 14-3/4 in. (ea. approx.) Michael Powolny (1871-1954) was an Austrian sculptor, ceramist, designer, and teacher. He was born in Judenburg, Austria and after completing trade school as a potter, he pursued his studies at ToninInstrie in Znaim before joining the UniversitŠt fŸr Angewandte Kunst (Vienna University of Applied Arts) in Vienna. Following his graduation, he founded the ÒWiener Keramik WorkshopÓ with Berthold Lšffler in 1906. It was a huge success and the attention he gained from selling his products gave him the opportunity to showcase his products internationally. His proximity to the ÒWiener SecessionÓ largely influenced his work, and the workshop became part of the Wiener WerkstŠtte a year later. There he designed many decorative objects and sculptures for Augarten porcelain, crystal for J. L. Lobmeyr and glass for Loetz.
