  • Native American Turquoise / Corn Sculpture C. Pratt
    Apr. 01, 2021

Native American Turquoise / Corn Sculpture C. Pratt

    Est: $600 - $900

Charles Pratt (Native American, 1937 to 2017), ca. mid to late 20th century CE. Signed on upper right husk. Charles Pratt was a Cheyenne and Arapaho artist renowned for his sculptural pieces of corn. His works often incorporate brass and turquoise to celebrate the sustaining crop. This piece is composed of a polished wood log, and brass sheets form wavy husks. The husks are peeled back to reveal the cob. The corn cob is skillfully made with turquoise stones and coral to form the individual kernels. Thin copper wires run up the kernel rows and twist at the top to create the tassel. A husk positioned above and behind the cob is inscribed with the artist's name. Pratt was a self-taught artist, learned metal working from his job in an auto body shop, and went on to earn numerous awards, including the Indian Arts and Crafts Association artist of the year in 1985 and 2004! A stunning piece that celebrates Native American agricultural heritage. Size: 10" L x 4" W x 9" H (25.4 cm x 10.2 cm x 22.9 cm) Provenance: private Fayetteville, Arkansas, USA collection All items legal to buy/sell under U.S. Statute covering cultural patrimony Code 2600, CHAPTER 14, and are guaranteed to be as described or your money back.
