In feiner, lasierender Malweise mit Liebe zum Detail ausgeführte Landschaft. Die atmosphärisch meisterhaft verdichtete Szenerie besticht durch das kraftvolle, satte Kolorit und die gekonnte Lichtführung in den dunklen Sturmwolken des aufziehenden Gewitters. Preller erhielt seine Ausbildung an der Weimarer Zeichenschule, wo er später Lehrer wurde. Durch eine lange Italien-Reise 1827-1831 mit einem Aufenthalt in Rom, wurde er zunächst von der heroischen Landschaftsauffassung Joseph Anton Kochs beeinflusst. Doch ließen ihn spätere Reisen in den Norden dem Wild-Romantischen zuneigen. Besonders prägend war 1840 eine Reise nach Norwegen, auf deren Grundlage eine Reihe von Felsküstenlandschaften im Sturm entstanden, wie sie u.a. heute noch in Weimar zu sehen sind. Nach seiner Rückkehr wurde er 1844 zum Professor und Hofmaler ernannt. Er blieb an der Weimarer Schule, deren Leitung er 1868 übernahm und an der er etwa 30 Jahre lang tätig bleiben sollte. Date: c. 1874 Description: It is a barren landscape through which a caravan of camels is travelling - ascending to a rugged rock formation on which a few palm trees defy the inclemency of the weather. The inhospitable landscape is reminiscent of the Roman Campagna in the vicinity of Rome, which many travellers at the time thought of as a barren desert far removed from any civilisation, but for Friedrich Preller it had "a truly patriarchal character, so that we could hardly take a better look at the Old Testament. History painters could make the best studies here, as they will hardly find simpler and grander motifs for the landscape."In fact, the sheet tells a story from the Old Testament - as the oriental-looking procession of camels already indicates: it shows the flight of Hagar with her son Ishmael through the desert - the slave of Sarah, who had received a son from Sarah's husband Abraham, whom she named Ishmael at the behest of the angel. When, contrary to expectations, Sarah gave birth to Isaac after all, Hagar was banished from Abraham's court and went on the run through the Beer-Sheba desert, where she wandered in search of a well. There is little sign of Hagar's dramatic wandering described in Genesis in Preller's work - here Hagar stands at the head of the caravan on a camel, having reached the top of the hill in the knowledge that God will free her from slavery and her son will become the progenitor of many nations. The sheet numbered top right comes from a small sketchbook that is now in the Thuringian Museum in Eisenach. A further seven sheets in various collections can be attributed to the 15 sheets preserved there. Preller filled it with material from the Old Testament during a longer stay in Ilmenau with his children and grandchildren in July and August 1874.In it, he also spreads out the life of Sara and her fate up to her burial on several sheets as a kind of picture story.The sheet, which has been brought to a close in terms of drawing and is clearly realised, impressively testifies to Preller's innovative power, which did not diminish until the end of his life. A trip to Italy in 1869 had inspired him to re-examine the magnificent landscape of the Campagna; after his return to Weimar, "the desire to invent and create new works stirred in him very vividly, and his creative activity unfolded an astonishing wealth over the next few years."In addition to mythological paintings, his turn to religious themes is particularly noteworthy, which began in 1870 with the large-format painting of the Good Samaritan (Leipzig, Museum of Fine Arts). Further paintings with religious, predominantly Old Testament subjects followed; our sheet could also represent a preparatory work for a painting, but it is more likely that Preller planned a cycle of prints on Hagar and Ishmael in the manner that the publisher Alphons Dürr in Leipzig, for example, published after Preller's death with his Odyssey landscapes or his Italian landscapes. FRIEDRICH PRELLER d. Ä. (1804 Eisenach - 1879 Weimar) Die Wartburg im 14. Jahrhundert, 1830er Jahre Öl auf Leinwand, 63,5 x 53 cm, in geschnitztem Original-Rahmen gerahmt, rückseitig Etikett mit Titel "Wartburg", Künstlername und Angabe "Phantast. Darstellung der Wartbg. von Südosten (vor 1842)". Gemälde wurde von Preller-Spezialist als authentisch bewertet und wird ins Werkverzeichnis aufgenommen. Gutachten vom Verfasser des neuen Werkverzeichnisses, das momentan erstellt wird, liegt bei. Friedrich Preller d. Ä. zählte im nachklassizistischen Weimar zu den führenden Künstlerpersönlichkeiten. Kurz nach seiner Geburt zog die Familie Preller nach Weimar, wo er zunächst von 1814 bis 1821 die Freie Zeichenschule besuchte. Auf Anraten von Goethe folgte unter anderem ein Studienaufenthalt in Dresden. Der Weimarer Großherzog Karl August reiste mit ihm in die Niederlande, wo Preller die Akademie besuchte. Ein fünfjähriger Studienaufenthalt in Italien sowie eine Reise nach Norwegen folgten. Nach seiner Rückkehr nach Weimar begann seine Karriere an der Fürstlichen freien Zeichenschule in Weimar: auf den Lehrauftrag folgte eine Professur, später die Schulleitung und die Ernennung zum Hofmaler. Sein Sohn Friedrich der Jüngere begann schon mit 13 Jahren, im Atelier des Vaters zu arbeiten und verfolgte ebenfalls eine erfolgreiche Laufbahn als Künstler. Das hier abgebildete Gemälde der Wartburg galt viele Jahre lang als verschollen. Im Werkverzeichnis von 1997 von Ina Weinrautner steht dem Eintrag "Verbleib unbekannt" beiseite. Es handelt sich hierbei also um eine wiederentdecktes Hauptwerk des Weimarer Künstlers. Dabei wird es weder in irgendeiner Sammlung vermisst noch wurde es zwischen 1933 und 1945 im Rahmen des Sonderauftrags Linz unrechtmäßig enteignet. Im Werkverzeichnis Weinrautners heißt es: "Auf einem Waldweg, umgeben von hohen Buchen und Eichen sowie niedrigen Nadelbäumen im Vordergrund, reiten zwei gerüstete Ritter zur Burg hinauf. Die Wartburg ist von der südöstlichen Spitze her gesehen, neben dem romanischen Südturm sind Palas mit Bergfried, der Elisabethengang sowie das Torhaus zu erkennen. Die von H. Ritgen an Stelle des alten Wohnhauses 1853-1859 an den Palas angebaute Neue Kemenate, die durch den sogenannten 'Luthererker' zu erkennen ist, fehlt. Das Gemälde [...] ist eine präzise Umsetzung der Radierung 'Die Wartburg im 14. Jahrhundert' (Ruland, 1904, Nr. 14)." (Weinrautner, Ina: Friedrich Preller d. Ä. (1804 - 1878). Leben und Werk (Monographien, Bd. 14), Münster 1997, Kat.Nr. 67, S. 231-232.). Bei Weinrautner ist angegeben, dass das Gemälde wahrscheinlich im selben Jahr wie die Radierung entstand, was aber nicht sicher belegt werden kann. Es handelt sich allerdings definitiv um ein Gemälde aus den 1830er Jahren, Kopien aufgrund der weiten Verbreitung der Radierung entstanden aber erst einige Jahrzehnte später. Besonders ansprechend ist die ruhige Abendstimmung der idyllischen Szene. Die Ritter, das Blattwerk und die Wartburg in der Ferne sind fein ausgearbeitet und zeugen von der meisterlichen Hand Friedrich Preller des Älteren.

Among the various academic schools of painting in 19th century Germany, the Weimar School of Painting occupies a very special position. Whereas the innovations in painting in the direction of modernism usually came from secessionist movements or freelance artists' colonies, the teachers in Weimar represented the views of the "Ecole de Barbizon", the most important movement from France, from the very beginning. The School of Painting was founded in 1860 as the Grand Ducal Saxon School of Art in Weimar under Carl Alexander of Saxony-Weimar, who was of decisive importance not only as a financial patron. With his death in 1901, the driving force fell away, so that the importance of the school of painting also faded at the turn of the century. From the very beginning, the landscape painters advocated a view of colour and light oriented towards reality. This was entirely in the spirit of French developments as shown by Daubigny, Millet or Rousseau - but in clear contrast to the academic tradition of 19th century neoclassicism. The head of the academy was Theodor Hagen, among others, and important students were Christian Rohlfs and Heinrich von Gleichen-Russwurm, both of whom later developed towards Impressionism and Modernism. This openness to new tendencies was also a typical sign of the school of painting, whose students were downright surprised and impressed by Claude Monet's novel paintings after an 1889 lecture by Emil Heilbut - unthinkable today given the simultaneity and worldwide availability of the most opposing views of art. One of the late teachers of the Weimar School of Painting between 1903 and 1907 was Ludwig von Hofmann, who is also represented with several works in our auction. Ludwig von Hofmann was again a pioneer of the Neues Weimar movement, from which the Bauhaus subsequently emerged as the formative home for the avant-garde of classical modernism. Date: c. 1874 Description: It is a barren landscape through which a caravan of camels moves - ascending to a rugged rock formation on which isolated palm trees defy the rigours of the weather. The inhospitable landscape is reminiscent of the Roman Campagna in the vicinity of Rome, which seemed to many travellers at the time to be a barren desert far from any civilisation, but for Friedrich Preller it bore "a genuinely patriarchal character [in itself], so that we would hardly be able to take a better look at the Old Testament. History painters could make the best studies here, since they will hardly find simpler and grander motifs for the landscape."In fact, the painting tells a story from the Old Testament - as the oriental-looking procession of camels already indicates: it shows Hagar fleeing through the desert with her son Ishmael - the slave of Sarah, who had conceived a son by Sarah's husband Abraham, whom she named Ishmael at the behest of the angel. When Sarah unexpectedly gave birth to Isaac, Hagar was banished from Abraham's court and went on the run through the desert of Beer-Sheba, where she wandered in search of a well. In Preller's work, there is little sign of Hagar's dramatic odyssey, which is described in Genesis - here Hagar is standing high on a camel at the head of the caravan, probably already having reached the top of the hill in the knowledge that God will free her from slavery and that her son will become the progenitor of many nations. The sheet numbered at the top right comes from a small sketchbook that is now in the Thuringian Museum in Eisenach. The 15 sheets preserved there can be assigned to another seven in various collections. Preller had filled it with material from the Old Testament in 1874 during a long stay in Ilmenau in the company of his children and grandchildren.In it, he also spreads out the life of Sara and her fate up to her burial on several sheets as a kind of picture story.The drawing, which is completed and confidently understood, is an impressive testimony to Preller's innovative power, which did not diminish until the end of his life. A trip to Italy in 1869 had inspired him to take another look at the magnificent landscape of the Campagna; after his return to Weimar, "the desire to invent and create new works was very lively in him, and his creative activity developed an astonishing wealth over the next few years.In addition to mythological paintings, his turn to religious themes is particularly noteworthy, beginning in 1870 with the large-format painting of the Good Samaritan (Leipzig, Museum der bildenden Künste). This was followed by further paintings with religious, predominantly Old Testament subjects; our sheet could also represent a preparatory work for a painting, but it is more likely that Preller planned a cycle of prints on Hagar and Ishmael in the manner that, after Preller's death, the publisher Alphons Dürr in Leipzig, for example, had published with his Odyssey landscapes or his Italian landscapes.
