Gorringes§ Chloe Preston (British 1887-1969) Second to None signed lower left "Chloe Preston" watercolour h:27.50 w: 25.50 cm Chloe Preston was a prominent and successful illustrator of humorous children's books and postcards. The present illustration was given by the Borwick family of Hazelbech, Northamptonshire, to Stanley Barton, their head gardener of 25 years. Lieutenant Colonel Malcolm Borwick and his son Major Peter Borwick were accomplished polo players with the Royal Scots Greys, and troopers and horses spent time at Hazelbech training for regimental ceremonial occasions. The present illustration features the unofficial motto of the Regiment - Second to None - referring to their seniority in the army and fighting prowess. The illustration may have been a commission or gift from the artist to the Borwick family.
