ROBERT TAYLOR PRITCHETT WATERCOLOR OF CHAMOIS HUNTERS, THE MATTERHORN BEYOND

        Est: $3,000 - $5,000

PRITCHETT, Robert Taylor (1823-1907). Chamois Hunters, the Matterhorn beyond. Pencil and watercolor on paper. Signed and dated 'R. T. PRITCHETT. / 1876' (lower left). 21 1/2" x 29 3/4" sheet. Pritchett, a gun maker and artist, was the son of Richard Ellis Pritchett, the head of the firm of Enfield gun makers which supplied arms to the East India Company and the Board of Ordnance. His early career was with spent at the gun makers where he invented a bullet that corrected the eccentricity of the Enfield rifle and won him fame as the 'Father of the Enfield rifle'. The company lost its principal customer with the abolition of the East India Company in 1858 and Pritchett embarked on a new career as an artist. Retaining as his device an ancient harquebusier and his gun, he travelled widely, and won the Queen Victoria's patronage in 1868. He was subsequently commissioned by the Queen to paint over 80 watercolours of her Jubilees and family events. A keen yachtsman, Pritchett was marine painter to the Royal Thames Yacht Club. He cruised the Pacific and tropics in the 1880s, on Joseph Lambert's Wanderer and on Sir Thomas and Lady Brassey's Sunbeam. His drawings illustrated the 1890 edition of Darwin's Voyage of the 'Beagle'. His published works include Gamle Norge: Rambles and Scrambles in Norway (1878), following his tour of Norway in 1874-5.

Robert Taylor Pritchett (1828 - 1907), 'Pen and Pencil Scraps from Belgium' - a sketchbook and journal of the artist's travels to Calais and Belgium, 1850, 31 pencil and watercolour sketches mounted in a full leather-bound book, with handwritten text, (five further sketches are missing), sketches around 14 x 19 cm each, volume 27 x 22 cm Before becoming an established artist and illustrator, Pritchett worked as a gun manufacturer at his father’s firm in Enfield. In 1853 he created the Pritchett bullet alongside William Ellis Metford which awarded the firm fame and success. However, the collapse of the East India Company in 1858 greatly reduced the firm’s productivity, with the former being one of the company’s primary customers. Pritchett took the opportunity to build a career as an illustrator working for Punch magazine and the publishing house Cassell, Petter, and Galpin between 1863 and 1869. He won the patronage of Queen Victoria in 1869 after she bought a painting that had been commissioned from the art dealership Thomas, Agnew & Sons. He went on to produce many watercolour illustrations of intimate events within the Royal Family up until Queen Victoria’s death. Before his career as an artist or his invention of the Pritchett bullet, he travelled to Belgium, producing this handwritten book he titled "Pen and Pencil Scraps from Belgium” in 1850. The work produced most likely went on to influence his entries to the 1851 and 1852 exhibitions at the Royal Academy of Art, which included a view of Belgium.

        Jan. 28, 2017

19th Century Watercolor Sketch of a Sioux Indian

        Est: $2,000 - $4,000

A Sioux Indian Outside a General Store. Robert Taylor Pritchett (1823-1907). Watercolor on paper. 5 x 5 inches sheet, 14 x 14 inches framed. Pritchett’s accomplished watercolor sketch encapsulates the changing life of the Sioux Indian. This tribe is the largest and most powerful group in the Siouan language family and they are commonly remembered as a warlike people who resolutely resisted Euro-American expansion during the middle of the 19th century. However, the history of Sioux-white relations is much more complex than these references imply, for the Sioux varied considerably in their way of life and their disposition toward the new settlers. On the whole the Sioux got on well with their new neighbors, at the beginning of the 19th century, but as they found themselves gradually pushed off their land to make way for farm settlements opinions changed. In Pritchett’s watercolor, the traditionally clad figure of the Sioux Indian holds a rifle and is juxtaposed against the store front, advertising products appealing to the new Euro-American settlers.

The 1893 America's Cup Challenge was contested between Vigilant and Valkyrie II. The Vigilant was commissioned by a syndicate headed by C. Oliver Iselin for the New York Yacht Club. The designer was the famous 'father of modern boat design', Nathaniel G Herreshoff from Bristol, Rhode Island. At 126 feet she was the smaller of the two yachts. Valkyrie II was commissioned by Lord Dunraven for The Royal Yacht Squadron, Cowes. The designer was George L. Watson. She was 133 feet in length with a smaller sail area of 10,000 sq. feet. The five race series was closely contested. Valkyrie II crossed the Atlantic in September 1893 and the first race took place on 7th October. Vigilant won by seven 5 minutes 48 seconds and on 9th October took the second race by 10 minutes 35 seconds. The third and final race took place on the 13th October. It became the most hotly contested in the history of the America's Cup, to be won by Vigilant, coming from behind to win by the narrowest of margins, just 40 seconds. The New York Times called it 'probably the greatest battle of sales that was ever fought'.
