Known for her portraits of women, sculpturally painted and often set against monochromatic backgrounds, Dod Proctor is an artist traditionally associated with the second generation of Newlyn School Artists. Born in Hampstead, she moved with her family to Newlyn when she was 17 and studied at the Stanhope Forbes’ School of Painting. She met her husband, Ernest, and the two attended the Atelier Colarossi in Paris from 1910-1, where she was exposed to the work of the French Impressionists. The work which established her as a household name was 'Morning' (1926) now in the collection of the Tate, London, which depicts a woman languorously reclining on a bed, bathed in the morning light, the colour palette reduced to subtle greys. The work was awarded picture of the year in 1927 at the Royal Academy and sent on a two-year tour, first in New York and later in Britain, after being purchased for the nation by the Daily Mail. Apart from her paintings of women, still life was one of her most enduring subjects. In the present work we see a traditional breakfast tray, with tea service, a spotted pot, painted china, toast and butter. Moving away from the crisp clarity of her early work, here the paint is dabbed on, with thick bits of impasto, in an almost pointillist technique which she developed and utilised later in her career. She painted against a white ground, which meant her colours appear to have an almost luminous quality. Condition Report: Presents well. Not examined under UV light. Provenance:John Andrews, Private Collection and thence by descentJohn Andrews wrote the first price guide to antique furniture and was Editor of the Antique Collecting Magazine. He also wrote, under the pseudonym John Malcom, the successful Tim Simpson crime fiction series in the 1980s and 1990s. Born in 1890, Doris (Dod) Shaw moved with her mother and brother to Cornwall to enrol in Stanhope Forbes' School of Painting. On arriving in Newlyn in 1907 Dod's mother, Eunice Shaw, rented Myrtle Cottage which swiftly became a place of secure familiarity for the young artist. So much so that when she married Ernest Procter in 1912 and they moved to 27 North Corner in Newlyn, the couple created a home reminiscent of Myrtle Cottage. This can be seen in the blue dresser and hand painted crockery depicted in the present painting that is similar to the interior of Kitchen at Myrtle Cottage, 1930-35, held in the Tate Collection and identical to The Quiet Hour, 1935, in The New Art Gallery, Walsall.North Corner offered Procter both seclusion and inspiration, grounding her work in the everyday world of the fishing village while allowing her to explore the quiet intimacy that defines much of her painting.The natural light that flooded through the cottage's windows gave her canvases their distinctive softness - a quality especially evident in her portraits of young women and children, often depicted in repose or, as in the present painting, quiet contemplation. The gentle curves, muted palettes, and stillness in her figures reflect both the calm of her immediate surroundings and her refined sense of form.North Corner wasn't just a home; it was a creative sanctuary where Procter distilled the essence of Newlyn life.

Dod Procter RA, British 1892-1972- Burmese Girl, c.1920; oil on card, inscribed to the reverse, 38.8x30.6cm (ARR) Provenance: with Orion Gallery, Penzance, according to the label attached to the reverse of the frame; Bonhams, London, 5 March 2013, lot 32 Note: Procter, born Doris Margaret Shaw, was educated amongst the artists' colonies of Newlyn and St Ives. She and her husband (and fellow artist) Ernest travelled to Rangoon in 1919 to undertake a commission from a Chinese businessman to decorate Kokine Palace. Upon completing their work, they travelled to Mandalay and sailed up the Irrawaddy. This would have been a rare experience for western artists at the time, as Burma was a relatively isolated country with few tourists or foreign visitors. In 1942, Procter became only the second woman (after Laura Knight) to have been made a Royal Academician since 1768. framed, in a parcel gilded and polychrome painted moulding frame, late 20th century.
