    Est: $600 - $1,000

Thea Proctor Australia, 1879-1966 Portrait of a Lady pencil and conte on paper signed, THEA PROCTOR, lower centre Includes a turned form, lower left, possibly from the chaise lounge featured in a pencil study of Thea Proctor (The Simpler Life)by George Lambert circa 1905 - held in the Queensland Art Gallery. To supplement her income, Proctor posed regularly for Lambert for his illustrative work and for his paintings. She did so from 1903 when she arrived in London until 1909 when she sat for him for his large portrait group The blue hat (Kerry Stokes Collection, Perth). (reference NGA, retrospective of George Washington Lambert) In this period in London, until 1911, Proctor also used some of the same models as Lambert, such as Dorothy Vernon, dancer and model, who is drawn in pencil by Proctor in 1911 - held in the collection of the National Gallery Of Victoria. That portrait is also signed in capital letters, suggesting it is from the same period as this example. Later, Thea Proctors works were signed in a cursive style. . By 2012, Thea Proctor was the first Australian woman to represent Great Britain at the Venice Bienalle.
