PERE PRUNA OCERANS (Barcelona, 1904–1977). "Portrait of a Woman," 1976. Lithograph on paper, P.A. edition. Signed on the plate and by hand, titled, dated, and inscribed. While the commercial edition consisted of a run of 200 numbered copies, this piece is one of the exclusive proofs reserved for the artist himself. This image was chosen to illustrate the official poster for the silver anniversary (25th edition) of the Fira del Llibre d'Ocasió Antic i Modern in Barcelona that same year. Measurements: 93 x 66.5 cm. Pere Pruna trained in Barcelona and then traveled to Paris in 1921, where he held a successful solo exhibition at the Galerie Percier; he was also a co-founder of the magazine “Philosophie” in 1924 alongside Cocteau, Max Jacob, and others. In 1925, he made his debut as a set and costume designer for Diaghilev, and in 1928, he won second prize at the Carnegie Institute exhibition in Pittsburgh. Later, upon his return to Barcelona, he won other awards, such as the prize in the “Montserrat as Seen by Catalan Artists” competition and the Nonell Prize. Following the outbreak of the Civil War, Pruna continued to exhibit internationally, notably in a show organized in London in 1937. In 1965, he won the City of Barcelona Prize, and three years later he was named a member of the Far de Sant Cristòfor Academy. Pere Pruna’s work is currently on display at the Montserrat Museum—where a space is named after him—the MACBA in Barcelona, and the Maricel Museum in Sitges, among others. While the commercial edition consisted of a print run of 200 numbered copies, this piece is one of the exclusive proofs reserved for the author himself. This image was chosen to illustrate the official poster for the silver anniversary (25th edition) of the Fira del Llibre d'Ocasió Antic i Modern in Barcelona that same year.

    Est: €1,200 - €1,500

PERE PRUNA OCERANS (Barcelona, 1904 - 1977). "Figure", 1969. Mixed media on paper. Signed and dated in the lower right area. Measurements: 32 x 40 cm; 54 x 59 cm (frame). Mainly self-taught artist, Pere Pruna completed his training at the School of Fine Arts in Barcelona. After beginning to exhibit in Barcelona when he was still very young, he traveled to Paris in 1921, where he was helped and guided by Picasso. In the French capital he held a successful solo exhibition at the Galerie Percier, and came into contact with intellectuals such as Cocteau, Drieu la Rochelle, Max Jacob and others, with whom he founded the magazine "Philosophie" in 1924. Serge Diaghilev, who visited one of his exhibitions, also proposed him to create the sets and costumes for the ballet "Les matelots" in 1925. Since then he also worked on other musical works, such as "La vie de Polichinele" (1934) and "Oriane" (1938), among others. In 1928 he won the second absolute prize in the exhibition of the Carnegie Institute of Pittsburg and later, on his return to Barcelona, he won other awards such as the competition "Montserrat seen by the Catalan artists" (1931) or the Nonell Prize (1936). The latter was surrounded by controversy, because Pruna obtained it for his oil painting "El vi de Chios", for which he used as a model a photograph published in a Parisian pornographic magazine. In view of the commotion caused, Pruna renounced the prize, but the jury ratified its decision. Following the outbreak of the Civil War, Pruna settled in Paris and continued his international exhibition activity, with an exhibition organized in London in 1937. At the same time he worked for Ridruejo's propaganda services, with works such as the poster commemorating the promulgation of the Labor Force, and Eugenio d'Ors, National Head of Fine Arts, introduced him to the Spanish representation at the Venice Biennale in 1938. After the war, he combined easel painting exhibitions with mural painting, a genre in which his work in the Monastery of Montserrat was especially celebrated. In 1965 he won the City of Barcelona award, and three years later he was named academician of the Far de Sant Cristòfor. Pere Pruna is currently represented in the Museum of Montserrat, where there is a space with his name, the MACBA in Barcelona and the Maricel Museum in Sitges, among others.

Oil on canvas. Signed. 60x73 cm. Pere Pruna travelled to Chamonix during the winter of 1930, where he drew inspiration for several compositions. The present work, a beautiful and understated snowy landscape with two figures, unpretentious in character, reveals the influence of his Parisian period. There, his friendship with Pablo Picasso and his contact with the avant-garde led him towards a simplification of forms, lines, and colour, in search of the very essence of representation. Other works set in Chamonix include Winter Sports, held at the Museu Nacional d'Art de Catalunya in Barcelona, and Winter Sports IV, in the Carmen Thyssen Collection in Madrid.

Pastel on paper Signed and dated 1925 74x54.5 cm Painted during his early Parisian period, at only 21 years of age, it reveals the finest aspects of his sober, modern style, executed in a medium he did not often use: pastel. Through the elegance of the lines, the delicacy of the modelling, and the softness of the face, this portrait stands as a clear example of Pere Pruna’s work. The vivid chromatic palette, contrasted with the restraint of the forms, lends a remarkable subtlety to the composition, a hallmark of his artistic production. Prolific and widely acclaimed, portraiture is one of the most valued genres in his oeuvre, shaped by his time in Paris, where he was close to Pablo Picasso and came into direct contact with the avant-garde movements.

    Est: €15,000 - €16,000

PERE PRUNA OCERANS (Barcelona, 1904 - 1977). "Nude in the snow". Oil on canvas. Signed and dated in the lower right corner. Measurements: 116 x 89 cm; 137,5 x 110 cm (frame). With great formal economy and an implacable chromatic sobriety, Pere Pruna manages to make us participants of the emotional stamp of his feminine portraits. Pruna's women are characterized by their simple elegance and a melancholy that safeguards their enigma. We are before an enigmatic and erotic scene, being both attributes with which Pere Pruna used to play in his best compositions. The posture and gesture shun naturalism, seeking instead a composition that prioritizes visual harmony and symbolic impact over realistic narrative. The purity and coldness of the white contrasts with the warm tones of the skin, emphasizing its corporeality. Pere Pruna studied at the School of Fine Arts in Barcelona. Following the outbreak of the Civil War, Pruna settled in Paris and continued with his international exhibition activity, with an outstanding exhibition organized in London in 1937. His style, centered on a graceful and stylized female figure, is based on the clear delicacy of the pink and "neoclassical" Picasso, and reveals a certain parallelism with the Italian Novencento. Pere Pruna is represented in the Reina Sofia Museum in Madrid, in the MNAC or in the Museum of Montserrat, as well as in important public and private collections.

Pruna focused on portraiture and especially on the female figure, capturing images marked by great delicacy and sober distinction. His representations are characterized by a stylized and diaphanous line, and are in tune with the return to order after the rupture that cubism meant in France, thus linking directly with the avant-garde. Pere Pruna often delved into feminine psychology, often placing women in environments of existential withdrawal and self-absorption. In this painting, he offers us a beautiful example of his immersion in the psyche of a woman who feels in a certain way a prisoner of her own condition. We deduce this interpretation from the way in which the young woman observes the bird in its cage. Always subtle, in aesthetics and content, we burst on this occasion into an intimate space charged with latent desires. Mainly self-taught artist, Pere Pruna completed his training at the School of Fine Arts in Barcelona.

Pere Pruna studied at the School of Fine Arts in Barcelona. A painter dressed in a harlequin's maillot makes the last touches of a drawing representing a figure of harlequin, as if the painted thing was transferred to the real thing by some type of sympathetic magic. These enigmatic games were frequent in Pere Pruna's paintings, in which the feminine world and its mysteries also occupied a preponderant place. With great formal economy and an implacable chromatic sobriety, that in this oil painting is practically reduced to three colors, Pere Pruna manages to make us participants of the emotional stamp of his feminine portraits. Pruna's women are characterized by their simple elegance and a melancholy that safeguards their enigma. This is an enigmatic and erotic scene, both attributes that Pere Pruna used to play with in his best compositions. A clothed man embraces a naked woman in the middle of an icy and solitary landscape. Both look at each other wordlessly with their fine features. Posture and gesture shun naturalism, seeking instead a composition that prioritizes visual harmony and symbolic impact over realistic narrative. The purity and coldness of the white contrasts with the warm tones of the skin and clothing, emphasizing their corporeality. Pere Pruna studied at the School of Fine Arts in Barcelona. PERE PRUNA OCERANS (Barcelona, 1904 - 1977). "Female portrait", 1924. Oil on canvas. Signed and dated in the lower right corner. Measurements: 92 x 73,5 cm; 114 x 95 cm (frame). We are before a singular painting for several reasons: on the one hand, it is a unique work within the best known production of Pere Pruna, on the other hand, it belongs to a stage, the Parisian, in which Pruna was introduced in the most avant-garde environment of the French capital by the hand of his admired Pablo Picasso. In 1920 Pruna arrived in Paris and there he met Picasso thanks to a letter of recommendation from Sebastián Sunyer; under the protection of the Malaga master, the young painter developed the most stimulating stage of his career. The influence of the Malaga-born painter is notable in this portrait, in which the intimate legacy of his blue period can be appreciated, but also assimilating Picasso's contemporaneous concern for what critics would baptize as "neoclassical period", a classicism with Mediterranean roots. Certainly, the formal purification to which the Andalusian master had arrived after leaving behind his cubist research, is transmitted to his disciple, Pruna, in an undeniable way, as we see in the subtle stroke that with a minimal drawing expresses the withdrawal of the figure in itself. The face seems to be carved in wood, with hard features that nevertheless communicate so much in their silence. In that fruitful Parisian period, which was to be a turning point in Pruna's career, the artist made harlequins directly inspired by those of Picasso. Here the inspiration is less direct and instead more profound, almost as if the mentor's brush had also left its mark on a portrait imbued with mystery. A mainly self-taught artist, Pere Pruna completed his training at the School of Fine Arts in Barcelona. After beginning to exhibit in Barcelona when he was still very young, he traveled to Paris in 1920, where he was helped and guided by Picasso. In the French capital he held a successful solo exhibition at the Galerie Percier, and came into contact with intellectuals such as Cocteau, Drieu la Rochelle, Max Jacob and others, with whom he founded the magazine "Philosophie" in 1924. PERE PRUNA OCERANS (Barcelona, 1904 - 1977). "Female nude", 1956. Oil on canvas. Signed and dated in the lower right corner. Measurements: 115 x 86 cm; 126 x 97 cm (frame). A young woman of stylized figure leans on the railing with one hand while with the other she holds a transparent veil that covers her head. Behind her, a landscape opens up with a first line of tall cypress trees between whose long canopies a country house can be seen. The girl responds to the prototype of the melancholic and fragile woman, mysterious and subtle in her movements, which Pere Pruna forged by placing his female models in calm settings, charged with metaphysical resonances. Pruna focused on the portrait and the female figure, endowing it with elegance and delicacy. This painting is in tune with the return to order championed by the avant-garde (including Picasso) in the thirties and forties, after the cubist and fauve period. In fact, Cocteau, a great friend of Pruna's, was one of the promoters of this return to classicism, in which Pruna would find his most authentic expression in the following decades. This canvas takes us into a suggestive, sensual and intimate atmosphere. A mainly self-taught artist, Pere Pruna completed his training at the School of Fine Arts in Barcelona. After beginning to exhibit in Barcelona when he was still very young, he traveled to Paris in 1921, where he was helped and guided by Picasso. Est: €2,500 - €3,000

PERE PRUNA OCERANS (Barcelona, 1904 - 1977). "Two brothers", 1969. Oil on canvas. Signed and dated in the lower right corner. Measurements: 46 x 61 cm. Pere Pruna trained at the School of Fine Arts in Barcelona. After starting to exhibit in Barcelona when he was still very young, he travelled to Paris in 1921, where he was helped and guided by Picasso. In the French capital he held a successful one-man show at the Galerie Percier, and came into contact with intellectuals such as Cocteau, Drieu la Rochelle, Max Jacob and others, with whom he founded the magazine "Philosophie" in 1924. Serge Diaghilev asked him to create the sets and costumes for the ballet "Les matelots" in 1925. From then on, he also worked on other musical works. In 1928 he won the second absolute prize at the Carnegie Institute exhibition in Pittsburg and later, on his return to Barcelona, he won other awards such as the "Montserrat seen by Catalan artists" competition (1931) and the Nonell Prize (1936). The latter was surrounded by controversy, because Pruna won it for his oil painting "El vi de Chios", for which he used a photograph published in a Parisian pornographic magazine as a model. In response to the uproar, Pruna withdrew the prize, but the jury upheld its decision. Following the outbreak of the Civil War, Pruna settled in Paris and continued his international exhibition activity, most notably his exhibition organised in London in 1937. His style, centred on a graceful, stylised female figure, is based on the clear delicacy of the pink and "neoclassical" Picasso, and reveals a certain parallelism with the Italian Novencento. Pere Pruna is represented in the Reina Sofia Museum in Madrid, the MNAC and the Montserrat Museum, as well as in important public and private collections.

PERE PRUNA OCERANS (Barcelona, 1904 - 1977). "Reclining Woman", 1969. Oil on canvas. Signed and dated in the lower right corner. Measurements: 97 x 146 cm. With great formal economy and an implacable chromatic sobriety, which in this oil painting is practically reduced to three colours, Pere Pruna succeeds in making us participants in the emotional imprint of his female portraits. Pruna's women are characterised by their simple elegance and a melancholy that safeguards their enigma. Pere Pruna trained at the School of Fine Arts in Barcelona.
